Why The Last Of Us Season 2 Made This Major Change To Abby

Actress Kaitlyn Dever is set to portray character Abby in HBO’s The Last of Us Season 2. Unlike her muscular video game counterpart, the on-screen version of Abby will not have bulging muscles. The creative minds behind the series, Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, have shared their reasoning for this departure from the original character design in the TV adaptation.

Druckmann explained to Entertainment Weekly that a significant factor was the casting process. “It would have been difficult for us to find someone as talented as Kaitlyn for this part,” he stated. He also emphasized that the game and television show were not intended to provide the same type of experience.

According to Druckmann, it was crucial for the game that Ellie and Abby played distinctly. He explained that Ellie should feel more nimble and navigate through, while Abby was designed to play more like Joel, being physically imposing and able to handle certain situations forcefully. Contrastingly, in the television adaptation, the team is taking a different approach.

In this particular retelling of the tale, the emphasis isn’t on continuous violence as much, focusing instead on the dramatic aspects. However, let me clarify that there is still some action present. The approach to the story has simply changed in terms of priorities.

As for Mazin, he expressed enthusiasm about showcasing Abby as a character who is “more physically susceptible” compared to her gaming persona, yet her spirit remains robust.

druckmann affirmed fans by stating that Dever was perfectly suited for the part of Abby. He explained, “Kaitlyn embodies the essence of the game within her.” He further added that when you observe Kaitlyn, a particular emotion can be seen in her eyes, which transcends whatever she’s going through, making it easier to connect with her. Druckmann emphasized the importance of finding someone who could evoke the same emotional connection we feel towards Bella.

In Season 2, Abby might not be as muscular as she appears in the game, and this isn’t the only change we can expect. Creator Mazin hints that fans of the game may become enraged (or “furor” as he puts it) due to the significant differences between the second season and the game’s storyline. Mazin explained, “We don’t aim to please people on social media or avoid upsetting them. We simply do what we believe is right.

The Last of Us Season 2 debuts this April on HBO and Max.

Regarding the game series, Druckmann has given strong hints that a third installment of The Last of Us is under development. Currently, developer Naughty Dog is working on two standalone games. One is Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, and many fans speculate that the other could be The Last of Us Part 3.
