As a seasoned gamer and a connoisseur of all things chilling, I eagerly anticipate the arrival of each Christmas, not for the traditional festive feasts or the forced family gatherings, but for the opportunity to immerse myself in a world of terror and suspense. For years, I’ve made it a tradition to reserve the late-night hours over the holiday season for marathon gaming sessions, fueled by snacks, drinks, and an unquenchable thirst for fear.
Each person typically follows unique customs during Christmas. A traditional approach involves indulging in holiday delicacies, leading to a state of post-feast lethargy or tranquility.
Cramming your entire extended family into one room is another (I’m hesitant to say popular) pick, but once night sets in and relatives have escaped their obligations for another year, precious free time becomes the greatest gift of all.
Every Christmas, I’ve made it a tradition to indulge in extended gaming sessions, usually involving the latest installment of Assassin’s Creed series. However, this tradition has an unexpected dark side. Ubisoft started redefining the Assassin’s Creed formula with their second installment at the end of the noughties, and I always save that game for a Christmas marathon.
In other words, lifelong passions aren’t common, and since the series didn’t seem to be offering the fresh take it required after the letdown of Unity in 2014, I shifted my interest towards horror stories and haven’t regretted that decision since.
The pairing is perfect. Gore and scares to offset the endless whimsy of Christmas? Check. Long nights to set the mood? Check. Ample supplies of snacks and drinks (alcoholic or otherwise) to supplement long sessions? Triple check.
Over the past ten years, I’ve been on the lookout for a chilling Halloween game annually, carefully storing it in a temporary time capsule to mature like an exquisite batch of aged mulled wine.

This year, I chose the terrifying remake of Silent Hill 2 by Bloober Team and Konami to keep me awake past Christmas and into the new year, aiming to extend my tradition of immersive horror gaming that started in 2023 with Remedy’s Alan Wake 2.
I’ve never had the chance to play the initial version of Silent Hill 2 myself. In fact, I haven’t played any games from the Silent Hill series. Yet, the legendary status of Silent Hill 2 is well-known in the horror genre, much like a chilling legend passed down through generations.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve come across few games that rival the chilling masterpiece I’m about to describe – a title that’s nestled comfortably within the genre of psychological horror. This game is set in a seemingly ordinary town, but beneath its mundane exterior lies a terrifying nightmare waiting to be unveiled. The atmosphere is heavy with suspense and deliberation, making each step I take feel like a descent into my own personal abyss.
I know all about Pyramid Head, Bubble Head Nurses, and Abstract Daddy. I know James Sunderland is the unwitting vehicle for me to experience the hell they wish to inflict and I’m going to relish every second as a palate cleanser.
Instead of Cliff Richard, Christmas specials, and corny jokes, Silent Hill 2 offers me a terrifying yet exciting holiday escape. I’m all set for this journey!
