Why Tells Me Lies Ended With Season 3 Revealed By Creator

Megan Oppenheimer, the creator of Tell Me Lies, is now sharing the reasons why the show won’t be continuing after three seasons.

In a recent interview with Deadline, creator Christopher Nolan stated that he believes three seasons is the ideal length for the show, and the fact that the main character, Lucy, is no longer in school makes continuing the story difficult. You can read his full statement below.

We genuinely love making this show and I adore our audience, but I’ve been talking with our writers for a while now, and we realized the natural progression of the story meant things were changing. Lucy’s moved on from school, and most of the cast are about to graduate college and head off in different directions, pursuing different careers. They’re all starting new chapters, and honestly, there wasn’t much to keep them connected anymore. I really believe in knowing when to end a show on a high note, and writing a proper conclusion. It was a tough decision, though. I kept asking myself if we could create another season that would be as good as the ones we’d already done, or if it would feel forced and different. It felt like we’d reached the end of the show’s core concept. Ultimately, I think it would have been worse to put out something I didn’t truly believe in. What really solidified my decision was knowing how much the cast loved the ending we created – they’d lived with these characters for so long, and their support meant everything to me. It gave me a lot of peace of mind.

I’d spoken with them before the season started and let them know I’d written the story as if it could be a conclusion. We didn’t know for certain what would happen, but we all felt like this might be the end. There was always a sense that the wedding and everything leading up to it would provide some kind of resolution.
