Why Tell Me Lies Season 4 will never happen

Now that the final episode of Tell Me Lies Season 3 is available on Hulu, fans are wondering if there will be another season. Here’s an update from the show’s creator, Meaghan Oppenheimer.

Okay, wow, the latest episode of this show totally wrecked me! Stephen is being a seriously awful manipulator, and it’s completely falling apart for Lucy. Then there’s Pippa – I can’t believe she’s been cheating on Wrigley with Diana! And to top it all off, Wrigley and Bree are clearly falling for each other, which is just… a lot. Honestly, my head is spinning!

Beyond all of that, the season finale also needs to address Bree’s mother returning, Lucy’s confusing relationship with Alex, and the events from the 2015 timeline. Basically, there are many storylines to resolve in the final episode of Tell Me Lies.

We won’t reveal any details about what happens next, but we can explain why there won’t be a Season 4. This news might be disappointing after the recent finale, but there is some good news to share.

Why Tell Me Lies Season 4 isn’t going ahead

The show ended because the creators felt the story had run its course after three seasons. While the series is based on Carola Lovering’s 2018 novel, they’ve already told more of the story than the book originally contained.

The creators worried that continuing the show for another season would overextend the storyline and disappoint viewers. This was especially true because, by 2009, the main characters were beginning to pursue separate paths.

Meaghan Oppenheimer, the creator of Tell Me Lies, shared on Instagram that tonight’s episode will be the last. She explained that this conclusion was planned from the beginning and that she and her writing team are very proud of how the series ends.

We were so thrilled with how much you enjoyed this season! We considered continuing the story in some way, but decided it felt like the right time to end it on a high note.

I’ve always focused on keeping the show high-quality and making sure you have the best possible viewing experience.

Leaving this project is tough, as it’s been a wonderful experience. However, I’m thankful we were able to finish the story the way we wanted, with a proper ending – something not many shows get to do.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Oppenheimer explained he believes three seasons is the ideal length for the show.

When asked if the team would consider continuing the show, she said they definitely enjoy making it and appreciate their viewers.

As a huge fan, I’ve been following all the behind-the-scenes stuff, and honestly, thinking about what comes next is tough. We’ve talked a lot about it, and it’s clear things have moved on. Lucy’s no longer a student, and most of the actors are either about to graduate college or will soon. They’re all starting to head their separate ways, pursuing different careers and living in different cities. It’s just not the same situation as before, making a continuation really challenging.

It’s tough when a show ends, even though I believe it’s a gift to know the ending is coming and be able to finish strong. There isn’t always a clear reason for it, which makes it difficult.

I was mainly wondering if we could create another season that would be as strong as the previous ones, and still feel like the same show. I realized it would require a complete overhaul, as the current structure had run its course.

It was a tough decision, but ultimately, I couldn’t submit something I didn’t feel good about. Knowing how much the actors, who had lived with these characters for a long time, loved the ending really reassured me that we’d made the right choice.

For a while now, Oppenheimer has predicted that Tell Me Lies probably wouldn’t get renewed beyond season three, but the news still upset many fans. One fan joked about the abrupt announcement, comparing it to a particularly manipulative character from the show, Stephen DeMarco.

Many viewers are asking for the show to continue, with one saying, “Please give us more seasons!” Another expressed confusion, stating that while they understand the decision to end it, the show is currently gaining a large following and could have continued successfully for a couple more seasons.

Many viewers are praising the show as fantastic television. One fan celebrated the three seasons, saying they were incredibly proud, while another simply called it ‘perfect!’

Meaghan Oppenheimer working on “edgy, twisted” new TV show

Okay, so it’s not totally disappointing news! We won’t be getting Season 4, which is a bummer, but I just heard that Oppenheimer is developing a brand new series, and from what I’ve gathered, it’s going to have that same addictive, twisty vibe as Tell Me Lies. I’m already intrigued!

She announced on Instagram that more stories are coming soon. In a recent interview with Deadline, the showrunner hinted at a new project, but didn’t share many details.

I’m currently developing a new project with 20th Television. It explores complicated and unsettling relationships, focusing on the lives of adult siblings and how deeply connected they are to each other.

I’m hoping to create a family drama with the same captivating, suspenseful, and addictive qualities as the show Tell Me Lies. I’m very familiar with the dynamics of troubled families, and that’s the kind of story I want to tell.

Okay, so I’ve been talking about how my stories tend to be pretty dramatic and complicated, and honestly, that’s just how my brain works! I always end up going to darker places, I guess. I personally don’t think my show, Tell Me Lies, is that wild, but I’ve definitely heard other people disagree!

What makes me anxious is likely unique to me, and I’m not one to judge what others find upsetting. I simply don’t enjoy TV shows that try to preach a particular message or lesson.

I just want to create stories based on my own experiences and emotions – things that genuinely resonate with me.
