Taylor Swift’s name has been associated with “The Vampire Diaries” since its debut in 2009, but contrary to widespread belief, she never made an appearance on the show during its run. In the past, co-creator Kevin Williamson expressed a desire to cast her as a vampire, leading some to think she might portray Lexi Branson, Stefan Salvatore’s friend. However, in the book “I Was Feeling Epic: An Oral History of The Vampire Diaries,” it has been clarified that the production team never actually considered Taylor Swift for the role.
Julie Plec reveals why Taylor Swift didn’t appear in The Vampire Diaries
During an interview regarding speculations about a possible Taylor Swift appearance on The Vampire Diaries, producer Julie Plec explained that they were approached by The CW about incorporating Taylor Swift into the show but declined because it wouldn’t fit with the show’s tone. She compared it to a scenario in 7th Heaven where Taylor could perform a free concert at school and make it seem realistic, but for The Vampire Diaries, such a cameo would feel out of place and disrupt the timeless atmosphere of the series, making it appear too modern. If she had known then what she knows now about her fondness for Taylor Swift, things might have been different. (paraphrased from ScreenRant)
It was made clear that Arielle Kebbel had been the preferred choice for the character Lexi all along, as Kebbel initially tried out for the part of Elena Gilbert.
Previously, Nina Dobrev mentioned Taylor Swift’s link to the show during an interview with E! News. She said, “Initially, we learned that Taylor Swift was a fan of our series. The producers even attempted to create a role for her. Unfortunately, it wasn’t possible due to scheduling conflicts, so she didn’t end up appearing on the show, but that was quite unexpected.” (as reported by Entertainment Weekly)
Initially, Kevin Williamson openly expressed his eagerness to cast Taylor Swift, stating he was “doing everything possible” and even joked about wanting her so much that he would go as far as killing for it (via E! Online). However, due to Swift’s escalating popularity and busy schedule, she was unable to appear on the show. Instead, Adelaide Kebbel took on the role of Lexi in several episodes, earning a devoted fanbase and maintaining a consistent presence throughout the series.
