Taylor Sheridan has breathed new life into Western television, consistently achieving high ratings and attracting a large global fanbase. His latest series, Landman, is proving popular, and its lead actor, Billy Bob Thornton, has finally responded to a question many viewers have been eager to have answered.
The second season of Landman just finished airing and was a big success for Paramount+, breaking previous viewership records. The show centers on Tommy Norris and his struggles in the competitive West Texas oil industry, where he faces off against both everyday people and wealthy rivals. The cast includes notable actors like Thornton, Ali Larter, Sam Elliott, Michelle Randolph, Demi Moore, and Jon Hamm.
In a recent interview with Variety, actor David Thornton talked about filming the newest season of Landman and shared his thoughts on why Taylor Sheridan’s popular shows often get overlooked during awards season. Thornton expressed his praise for the series, noting he was “surprised” by its international success, but disappointed it hasn’t received more recognition from the Hollywood community.
A lot of the criticism seems to be politically motivated. People often wrongly assume Taylor supports right-wing ideas, but that’s not true. Even though his show focuses on the oil industry, he simply presents what it’s like, without promoting it or taking sides.
This situation – the impact on those working in or connected to this business, including families and those around it – is common. However, I believe people misunderstood what was happening.
Acting isn’t like a sport. In sports, like the Olympic 100-meter dash, there’s a clear winner – the first one to finish. But in the arts, it’s much harder to determine who is ‘best’ because it’s based on opinions and feelings, not concrete results.
As of today, Landman has won two awards and been nominated for fifteen, including recognition from the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild. While Taylor Sheridan hasn’t personally won any awards for his TV shows like Yellowstone, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for the film Hell or High Water.
Despite consistently high ratings and record-breaking viewership on streaming platforms, shows like Yellowstone and Landman haven’t received much awards recognition. Comments made by David Thornton might suggest a reason why the entertainment industry often overlooks the work of writer and director Taylor Sheridan.
Landman seasons 1 and 2 are available to stream on Paramount+.
