A casual glance at the initial unveiling of the Nintendo Switch 2 didn’t offer extensive gameplay clips, except for a fleeting peek at a fresh Mario Kart. Most gamers might find this sneak peek intriguing, showcasing the potential capabilities of the Switch 2. However, a seasoned game developer has dissected how this footage subtly highlights the impressive power that Nintendo’s upcoming system holds.
At Sungrand Studios, Jerrel Dulay, who’s worked on the Silver Falls game series, showcased an in-depth perspective about Switch 2’s capabilities. Given his past experience developing games for the initial Switch console, he was able to clearly notice the differences between the two generations. Two key aspects he highlighted were the authentic volumetric lighting, a sophisticated lighting method that adds depth to the environment, and the exceptionally detailed and distinctive background textures.
Due to the initial version of Switch finding it challenging to run these advanced features smoothly at a high frame rate, Dulay pointed out that their presence indicates that the upcoming system is notably more powerful. Moreover, he approximated that the RAM for Switch 2 could range from 12-16GB. Furthermore, Dulay highlighted the real-time shadow rendering, cloth simulation on background flags, reflective textures, and increased polygon counts on character models like Mario and his friends. Combining all these improvements at a steady 60fps showcases the substantial advancement of Switch 2 compared to its predecessor.
Besides expressing his eagerness to try out the development tools for the Switch 2, Dulay mentioned that the initial version of the Switch, with its Unity game engine, had certain restrictions that prevented him from fully realizing some of his creative ideas. However, now he’s optimistic that those games he had to put on hold due to the Switch’s limitations can finally be developed as intended.
During the upcoming Nintendo Direct on April 2, we’ll learn more about the new Nintendo Switch model (Switch 2) and its associated games. If you can’t wait to give it a try, there will be demo opportunities in various cities worldwide starting from April. Nintendo has also shared that the Switch 2 is compatible with most existing Switch games. As for when it will hit the shelves, a release date hasn’t been announced yet, but some speculate it might launch as early as June.
