The new crime drama “Task” by the creator of “Mare of Easttown” has caught your attention yet? This series features Mark Ruffalo and Fabien Frankel from “House of the Dragon,” and HBO has given it their top spot. What’s keeping you from diving in?
Speaking of which, it’s worth noting that the television programs aired on HBO during Sunday evenings have produced some truly exceptional series such as The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Succession, and Game of Thrones among others.
In a more conversational tone, one might say: Despite Mare of Easttown receiving 16 Emmy nominations, Kate Winslet winning Best Actress, and boasting a high Rotten Tomatoes score, there’s an argument to be made that the show is somewhat overlooked compared to other popular series. It often seems like people barely remember it, yet when reminded, they recall it fondly as “Oh yeah! I’d forgotten about that, but it was truly fantastic.
Currently, Task presents an excellent chance for you to leapfrog before others do. By the conclusion of this piece, if you’re still unconvinced, consider reflecting on your thoughts.
What is Task about?
The story revolves around an FBI agent named Tom, based in Philadelphia, who heads a special task force. Their mission is to track down and apprehend a criminal operating locally, played by Tom Pelphrey.
The story unfolds in the gritty neighborhoods surrounding Philadelphia, where an FBI officer leads a team to halt a series of brutal heists orchestrated by a seemingly ordinary local resident.
In a similar vein, any narrative reminiscent of the iconic action movie “Heat” is bound to be mentioned, but in this case, it served as a significant source of inspiration, much like HBO’s “Mare of Easttown.
Creator Brad Inglesby discussed with The Wrap some considerations regarding Mare of Easttown Season 2. One challenge he mentioned and found challenging was that whenever he attempted to imagine what would transpire in Mare’s [Kate Winslet] life, it seemed the potential developments fell short of the emotional depth experienced in the first season.
After contemplating following Mare, I had a few concepts, but the one that truly ignited my passion was called Task. My enthusiasm stemmed from a character named Tom, a man deeply rooted in faith who’s currently grappling with losing it and searching for his way out of this spiritual void.
Clearly, Heat had a significant impact on me. As a child, I repeatedly watched this film, and since Mare of Easttown seemed like another whodunnit series, I chose not to create another one as Mare seemed to already cover that genre.
As a gamer, I found Heat truly captivating because it kept me on the edge of my seat. The source of this tension was the internal conflict – I yearned for Robert De Niro’s character to evade capture, while simultaneously rooting for Al Pacino’s character to track him down. Knowing that these two outcomes couldn’t occur made their inevitable confrontation all the more intriguing. This cat-and-mouse game was a fascinating concept to me.
Who’s in the Task cast?
Mark Ruffalo heads up the ensemble in the film, with Tom Pelphrey, Fabien Frankel, and Emilia Jones as fellow principal cast members. Additionally, the following actors are part of the cast:
1. Mark Ruffalo – Lead Actor
2. Tom Pelphrey – Co-Star
3. Fabien Frankel – Co-Star
4. Emilia Jones – Co-Star
5. Other Cast Members (the specific names would be provided here)
- Thuso Mbedu as Aleah
- Raúl Castillo as Cliff
- Alison Oliver as Lizzie
- Owen Teague as Peaches
- Silvia Dionicio as Emily
- Martha Plimpton as Kathleen McGinty
In an interview with USA Today, Mark Ruffalo confessed that Tom is one of the most demanding characters he’s ever portrayed. He explained, “There’s a lot going on with this character from the get-go. It felt like, ‘This is going to be intense.’ And it certainly was.
Tom seems to be struggling at the onset of the series. He appears heavier than before and is often disheveled. To reflect his emotional state following a tragic event, Inglesby noted that Tom, as the family’s anchor, is seemingly lost, showing changes in his eating and drinking habits.
Instead of adding weight, Ruffalo chose to wear padding beneath his clothing for the convenience of Spider-Man in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day”.
It’s not yet confirmed about the role, so here’s hoping it comes true! This job is crucial for me. However, you need to be fit as a fiddle for this position. There’s absolutely no room for camouflage in that outfit,” he expressed.
Is Task worth watching?
Absolutely! You definitely shouldn’t miss out on this film. Critics are raving about it, calling it “the standout crime thriller of the year,” and it boasts an impressive 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’d say this year’s top crime thriller has got to be an absolute winner! It’s not just a testament to the power of multi-episode TV series – be it seven, eight, or nine parts – but also a masterclass in storytelling. The plot unfolds like a thrilling game of cat and mouse, revealing characters and their actions bit by tantalizing bit, leaving you on the edge of your seat, yet never losing momentum.
The task doesn’t lack uniqueness due to its resemblance to other shows. Exceptional narratives have the power to transport us from our ordinary world into another, or amplify reality so much that it becomes all-consuming. The key is that they manage to strike a chord so deeply that you can’t help but feel emotionally involved.” [IndieWire also wrote this.]
As a gamer, I’ve got to say, the LA Times hit the nail on the head when they praised Task as exceptionally crafted with top-notch acting. Unlike other crime games that often wallow in senseless violence, this one aims to uplift you. It doesn’t leave you feeling down and disheartened, but instead, hopeful. It’s a breath of fresh air in the gaming world.
