Why Johnny Lawrence is Essential for Future Cobra Kai Spinoffs!

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve just wrapped up my latest mission with Cobra Kai, but let me tell you, the Karate Kid saga isn’t done rolling yet! Exciting spin-offs are in the works, but they’ll only move forward if one crucial condition is met.

At first glance, Cobra Kai seemed like an unpromising concept. It stemmed from a 2015 YouTube video that proposed Johnny Lawrence as the true hero of The Karate Kid, while portraying Daniel LaRusso as the antagonist who ruined Johnny’s life by arriving in town.

Drawing inspiration from this compelling perspective, writer-producers Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg created a contemporary series that narrates the story, with Johnny being a down-on-his-luck character who’s yet to overcome the bitter injustice of Daniel’s crane kick. To put it plainly, it was definitely not by the book.

Initially, the show debuted on YouTube when their video-streaming platform attempted a somewhat unenthusiastic venture into television production. Later, Netflix purchased the rights to air the previous episodes and produce new ones in-house. The viewership skyrocketed, leading to Cobra Kai spanning an impressive 65 episodes over six seasons.

The Miyagiverse will continue

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but notice that Netflix seems to have a soft spot for greenbacks. Yet, the finale of Cobra Kai feels less like an ending and more like a prelude. Back in 2022, Jon Hurwitz took to Twitter, hinting that there will indeed be more Cobra Kai and that the Miyagiverse is far from exhausted.

In December 2024, Hayden Schlossberg shared with Collider: “I believe you’ll wrap up the series, leaving you wanting more. There could be exploration into some characters’ pasts or future paths, and the final episodes will certainly offer plenty of possibilities to look forward to.

Josh Heald explained to Rolling Stone that the finale of Cobra Kai was left purposefully open-ended, offering opportunities for either the creators or a new generation to continue the story in the years to come, or even for spin-offs to branch off. They didn’t want to destroy the world and end it there; instead, they saw the universe as dynamic and full of potential for future developments.

Ideas for potential Cobra Kai spinoffs

For the Cobra Kai spin-offs to be successful, it’s essential that Johnny Lawrence is part of the future narrative. His role in the original Karate Kid films was limited, mainly focusing on Daniel’s journey, but for the new series, his story deserves equal attention.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but admire the transformation of Johnny Lawrence in Cobra Kai. Crafted brilliantly by the show’s creators and skillfully portrayed by William Zabka, Johnny has evolved into one of the most endearing and captivating characters on TV. The absence of his presence on the screen is deeply felt, making it evident that the Netflix series misses his charm whenever he’s away.

In a new twist, Cobra Kai introduced fresh characters such as Miguel, Robby, Sam, and Tory. These youngsters argued, flirted, and fought, all the while developing complex feelings for one another. However, these narratives began to feel predictable and monotonous, with their relationships following a similar pattern as the show continued.

In this special sneak peek from Cobra Kai Season 6, Part 3, it appears that the Sekai Taikai competition is making a comeback. The grand finale of Cobra Kai will be streaming on Netflix starting February 13th.

Additionally, there have been discussions about creating a spinoff featuring Demetri and Eli, two characters who introduced tension early on and later brought humor to the series. However, they didn’t develop into compelling characters on their own, making a solo show questionable at this point.

In a somewhat surprising admission, given my deep affection for the character, I find myself whispering that Daniel LaRusso, over time, has become a tad ordinary. His tale was captivating during his interactions with Mr. Miyagi in the Karate Kid trilogy, where their frequent clashes and mutual growth created a bond that enriched both characters.

In Cobra Kai, Daniel often appears somewhat timid or uncertain, frequently expressing concern towards his children or voicing complaints to his spouse. However, he truly shines when Miyagi reappears in dream sequences or through a plot device, causing Daniel to question himself and even his mentor, which momentarily makes him more interesting.

Why Johnny Lawrence is key to Cobra Kai’s future success

In this latest version, Johnny is an intriguing character, rich with complexity. Once a popular high school athlete, he now grapples with self-loathing and insecurity. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, he can be incredibly funny when confronted with modern technology, seeming like a fish out of water. He also has a penchant for quoting lines from the action movies he adores. Beneath his profanity and bravado lies a kind soul, stirring empathy in viewers as deeply as Johnny secretly cherishes his Cobra Kai students.

As an ardent fan, I can’t help but express my strong belief that any fresh tale within the Miyagiverse should undeniably revolve around Johnny. Or even better, let’s envision a subsequent series that carries on his journey, delving into Johnny’s experiences as he navigates married life and parenthood, particularly fatherhood to a baby girl. Much like how the Karate Kid movies thrived on Mr. Miyagi’s mystical presence, it is Johnny Lawrence who holds the key to Cobra Kai’s captivating allure.
