Why is Odessa A’zion pulling out of Deep Cuts? Whitewashing controversy explained

Odessa A’zion, who recently gained attention for her role in the hit show Marty Supreme, has decided to leave the upcoming romantic comedy Deep Cuts, and she’s made the announcement publicly.

2025 was a breakthrough year for Odessa A’zion, largely due to her role in the hit film Marty Supreme, which earned her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the upcoming Academy Awards.

She also received rave reviews for her work opposite Rachel Sennott in the HBO comedy I Love LA.

She was scheduled to star in a movie based on the popular book Deep Cuts, but A’zion has posted on Instagram to explain why she’s no longer involved.

Why is Odessa A’zion pulling out of Deep Cuts?

Odessa A’zion was originally cast in the role of Zoe, but she left the project because she learned the character was intended to be Jewish and of Mexican descent, and she had concerns about whitewashing.

A’zion announced on Instagram that they are no longer involved with the movie, stating they stand with their supporters and are completely against the project. They used strong language to emphasize their decision to withdraw.

Thanks everyone for letting me know about this. I completely agree with all of you, and I really appreciate your support. I’m so sorry this happened.

I need to tell you what happened: I was hoping to get Percy, but they offered me Zoe instead, and I immediately agreed! I’m really upset though, because I hadn’t read the book and didn’t realize what I was getting into with Zoe… and now that I do, I’m regretting my quick decision.

She explained that she would never accept a role that belonged to someone else. She emphasized, ‘It shouldn’t be me!’ and clarified that there are many other talented people who are better suited for the part.

A’zion concluded by saying, “I can’t wait to see who it ends up being.”

Sean Durkin, the director of The Iron Claw, will also direct a new film called Deep Cuts. He wrote the screenplay, and Drew Starkey and Cailee Spaeny are set to star. Filming is scheduled to begin this year.

What is Deep Cuts?

Deep Cuts, a romantic drama by Holly Brickly released in 2025, explores the themes of love, music, and the challenges that come with achieving fame and success.

According to HarperCollins, the story begins in 2000 when Joe plays Percy a song in his dorm room. Percy immediately recognizes his talent, understands she could help him create incredible music, and knows she’ll always be a behind-the-scenes influence.

Despite feeling jealous, she focuses on working with Joe, helping his songs become popular with her honest and sharp feedback. As they create music together, a strong, undeniable connection forms, hinting at a budding romance – and the pain that might follow.

With Joe now the center of attention, will Percy be able to stay quiet and watch? And can he cope being near him without her?
