Everyone thought Hugh Jackman had retired from playing Wolverine after the movie Logan, so it was a huge surprise to see him return in Deadpool & Wolverine. Now that he’s back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there’s a chance he could even get his own new movie.
Despite ongoing speculation about Patrick Stewart potentially retiring after Avengers: Doomsday, a recent report indicates Hugh Jackman may return as Wolverine in his own movie. The rumor gained traction after X user @KnightGambit discovered a Marvel patent filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for the word “WOLVERINE”. You can find details about the patent here.
This news could indicate Marvel is developing another Wolverine film, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that’s the case. It could also point to a new streaming show, a revival of the character’s toy line, or simply a routine copyright renewal – all of which are possibilities.

Hugh Jackman revealed a surprisingly bold tactic he used to secure his second audition for the role of Wolverine. He essentially pulled a clever, if somewhat cheeky, move to get the casting directors’ attention.
It’s worth remembering that big companies often acquire patents for ideas, characters, or brands, even if they don’t immediately use them. That being said, there’s a definite possibility Marvel has significant plans for Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine.
It’s not surprising to see talk about a new Wolverine movie. Deadpool & Wolverine was a huge success, and James Marsden has mentioned that X-Men actors are constantly asked when they’ll return. With so much interest in Hugh Jackman reprising his role, it would be a mistake for Marvel to not consider it.
Marvel isn’t sharing any details about the future of the character, and hasn’t officially said if Wolverine will appear in Avengers: Doomsday. Hugh Jackman is also staying tight-lipped and refusing to reveal anything.
While a standalone Wolverine movie seems like a good idea, it also makes sense for the character to appear in Avengers: Doomsday. I think that film will be crucial in determining if a Wolverine movie will actually happen, and what its story might be.
With the highly anticipated movie Avengers: Doomsday slated for release on December 18, 2026, fans are eager for news about Hugh Jackman’s future as Wolverine. I’m hoping we’ll see him in a limited series, similar to the successful The Penguin show DC recently created.
