Why Doctor Who’s The War Between The Land And The Sea Could Be Big For The Franchise, According To Russell T. Davies

Doctor Who is coming back in 2026, though initially with just one special episode. But fans won’t have to wait long for more stories from that world – Disney+ will also be releasing “The War Between the Land and the Sea,” a new series set in the Doctor Who universe. This spinoff doesn’t feature the Doctor, but it will star the Sea Devils, creatures fans already know. Showrunner Russell T. Davies suggests this could be a significant development for the entire franchise.

Davies recently discussed the new Doctor Whorelated series with Empire, revealing it will premiere in the UK on BBC on December 7th. He explained one of his goals for the show is to demonstrate that Doctor Who* is capable of telling stories in a different style.

I aimed to demonstrate the incredible power and potential of this world to the BBC.

Many of the most memorable Doctor Who episodes teach a clear lesson, and the show generally explores themes that are easy for everyone to grasp. From what we’ve seen so far, the upcoming episode, ‘The War Between the Land and the Sea’, seems to be focusing on environmental issues – a topic Doctor Who doesn’t often cover.

Russell T. Davies has revealed the new series will focus on environmental themes and aims to bring back older fans of the show. He hinted that major water companies might not be depicted positively in the upcoming episodes, which could significantly boost the show’s popularity.

This show feels incredibly current, tackling issues like the frustrating practices of water companies and their executives. And given that the series is about water, it really has to!

I’ve been hearing amazing things from Russell T. Davies about this series – he actually said it was one of the best experiences of his entire career! It makes me so excited, but I also wonder if it will be enough to keep fans happy while we’re all waiting for the next season of Doctor Who.

More On Doctor Who

As a huge fan, I was so thrilled to see Ncuti Gatwa’s run as the Doctor be so openly and wonderfully LGBTQ-friendly – it felt incredibly important and progressive! However, there’s one storyline that really bothers me; it feels like a major plot point was left completely unresolved, and honestly, it’s a little frustrating after everything we’ve seen.

While The War Between the Land and the Sea isn’t the only thing Doctor Who fans have to look forward to, Arthur Darvill and Karen Gillan are starting a podcast called The Pondcast. They’ll be looking back at their experiences on the show and talking to other people who worked on it.

The future of the show feels uncertain after its deal with Disney fell through, and it’s currently searching for a new co-producer. The recent reveal of Billie Piper as the new Doctor, orchestrated by Russell T. Davies, was a surprise for many fans. While things don’t seem great for the series at the moment, there’s hope that upcoming projects will help revitalize it and get the main show back on course.

Disney+ has announced a new series called The War Between the Land and the Sea, but we don’t know exactly when it will be released, other than sometime in 2026. I’m also hoping to hear soon if older episodes of Doctor Who will be available to stream somewhere, as I’d love to watch them again.
