The final episode of “Love Story,” Episode 8, will be released tonight and is expected to remind viewers of the heartbreaking real-life tragedy it depicts: the plane crash that took the lives of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette.
Ryan Murphy’s latest show follows the relationship between John F. Kennedy Jr. (played by Paul Anthony Kelly) and fashion publicist Sarah Pidgeon. It depicts their fast-moving romance and the constant, intense attention they received from the media.
Last week’s episode, ‘Exit Strategy’, showed how the couple reacted to Princess Diana’s death – a particularly unsettling moment for viewers who know the future. The episode also focused on the growing problems in their marriage, leading to a significant fight that widened the distance between them.
Now that the show is ending with a depiction of their tragic deaths, people are starting to focus on the real-life events that caused the accident and what experts have shared about what happened that night.
Why did JFK Jr & Carolyn Bessette’s plane crash?
The plane crash happened because the pilot, John F. Kennedy Jr., got disoriented while flying at night in foggy weather. This caused him to lose control of the aircraft, which then fell into the Atlantic Ocean.
John F. Kennedy Jr. was still gaining experience as a pilot, having earned his license in April 1998. On the evening of July 16, 1999, he departed from Essex County Airport in New Jersey at 8:39 PM, flying a Piper Saratoga to Martha’s Vineyard. He was accompanied by his wife, Carolyn Bessette, and her sister Lauren.
Jeff Guzzetti, an investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board, explained that visibility was poor on the night of the incident. He stated, according to Entertainment Weekly, that it was dark, the moon provided little light, and haze was present. Guzzetti also suggested that John F. Kennedy Jr. may have been attempting a flight beyond his skill level.
Even though the weather conditions seemed okay for flying using visual cues, it was hard to see over the water. Guzzetti described it as if the ocean was completely dark, with visibility limited to just three to five miles through haze. This meant Kennedy couldn’t clearly see anything outside the plane to help guide him.
He was trained to fly using sight, not instruments, but it was too dark to see that night. Experts think this caused him to become spatially disoriented – a dangerous situation where a pilot gets confused about where they are and how the plane is moving.
Guzzetti explained that this situation could have disoriented the pilot as the flight ended. He believes the pilot would likely have been confused and possibly scared, as the aircraft’s instruments might not have aligned with what they were experiencing.
Radar showed the plane started drifting off course, wandering for about 30 miles, before beginning a downward turn. According to Guzzetti, the plane entered a final turn and continued that turn all the way down until it crashed into the ocean.
If he had simply flown straight and level, he would have reached Martha’s Vineyard in just three to five minutes.
The plane fell rapidly, with experts calculating it took only 17 seconds from the moment it began to descend uncontrollably until it crashed. The accident happened at 9:40 PM, about an hour after the plane left the ground.
The plane crash wreckage was found on July 20th. The bodies of John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife Carolyn, and her sister Lauren were recovered the next day. Investigators concluded that all three died immediately in the crash.

In the years following the tragedy, more details have come to light. A 2024 biography, JFK Jr.: An Intimate Oral Biography, revealed that Carolyn Bessette’s mother, Ann Freeman, had previously cautioned John F. Kennedy Jr. against flying with both of her daughters simultaneously.
After the incident, the Bessette family, with Ann Freeman taking the lead, sued for wrongful death. While reports suggested a $15 million settlement, the family’s lawyer, Constantine Ralli, told CNN that this figure was inaccurate and he didn’t know its source.
JFK Jr & Carolyn Bessette conspiracy theories still circulate
Although investigators officially blamed pilot error for the crash, considering the Kennedy family’s past, it’s not surprising that many conspiracy theories about their deaths have circulated for years.
Okay, so I’m seeing everyone on Hulu freaking out about the new JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette show, Love Story. Apparently, people think the actor playing the pilot is actually JFK Jr.! It’s wild. They’re saying the actor credited as ‘Pilot’ – Philip G. Carlson – only has one other acting credit, a movie called “Games People…” which is super strange and adding to the conspiracy theories. I gotta admit, it’s a pretty convincing rumor!

Okay, so I’ve been reading up on this, and there were a lot of rumors going around – people thought the plane might have been deliberately crashed, maybe for political reasons. But honestly, there’s never been a single shred of proof to back that up. The investigators checked everything out and found no issues with the plane’s mechanics, and nothing to suggest anyone messed with it on purpose. It really seems like just a tragic accident.
Some people thought the plane might have exploded in the air or collided with another aircraft, but the National Transportation Safety Board didn’t find any evidence of that. Instead, the way the wreckage was scattered and what investigators recovered suggested the pilot lost control and crashed at a high speed.
A popular conspiracy theory claims John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette staged their deaths to avoid the public eye and are secretly still living. This idea gained traction in 2021 with the spread of QAnon, which falsely asserted that JFK Jr. was alive and poised to become Vice President.
According to the Independent, fans met in Dallas in November hoping he would come back and participate in a future political effort. When he didn’t appear, some people believed his return was just postponed and would happen at a different location.
After he repeatedly failed to appear, some QAnon believers at a 2022 rally even claimed Trump was secretly JFK Jr. While most people have lost interest in QAnon, conspiracy theories still spread online.
Some people watching the movie Love Story thought the actor playing the pilot might actually be John F. Kennedy Jr.
Despite a lack of any reliable evidence challenging the NTSB’s findings, the agency maintains that the crash was mainly caused by the pilot becoming disoriented and making errors.
