Before Netflix released the documentary series Sean Combs: The Reckoning, Diddy publicly criticized both Netflix and the filmmakers. A major point of contention for the rapper, who is currently in jail, is that the documentary used footage he claims was taken without permission. However, the series’ director and producer, 50 Cent, have denied this claim. Now, they are speaking out about why Diddy filmed that footage in the first place.
Director Alexandria Stapleton and 50 Cent have been promoting their new documentary, and during a recent interview with GQ, they were questioned about where they got the footage used in it. When neither of them revealed their source, the interviewer asked why they believed Diddy would have ordered the creation of such footage. 50 Cent then offered his opinion on the matter.
Look, I’ll be straight with you – I just didn’t get the point of this one. My initial reaction? Pure shock, honestly. It left me thinking ‘Wow, what was that all about?’ It wasn’t a good kind of ‘wow,’ either.
The video footage reportedly comes from the six days before Sean Combs’ arrest in September 2024. While Combs’ representatives claim he was filming for personal reasons, they haven’t given any details. Alexandria Stapleton’s documentary explores both Combs’ success in the music industry and his subsequent decline. Stapleton suggested that it makes sense Combs would film himself, and explained this in relation to the documentary itself.
It’s interesting that during his sentencing, he actually released a documentary he’d made about his life, intending it as a defense for the court and sharing it with the public. It really shows that Sean enjoys being filmed – he was on reality TV for ten years, after all. Whatever the outcome, it’s clear he wants to control how his story is told and be the one to shape his own image.
Stapleton and Jackson had said a filmmaker gave them the video, and they emphasized they worked hard to keep that source confidential. Since the person’s identity is still unknown, Sean Combs remains critical of the documentary, The Reckoning. His mother, Janice Combs, also expressed her displeasure with the series, publicly disputing claims that she was an abusive parent.
I’ve been following this whole situation with Diddy, and it’s interesting to hear 50 Cent talk about why he’s making this documentary. Apparently, even though he and Diddy have had their issues for years, that wasn’t what drove him to do it. He’s said he wants to show the public that Diddy’s alleged behavior doesn’t represent what everyone in hip-hop believes in or supports. It’s about making it clear the hip-hop community doesn’t necessarily agree with those actions, and I think that’s important.
Following his trial this summer, Diddy was found guilty of two charges related to transporting individuals for prostitution. He is currently in prison, serving a four-year sentence at Fort Dix. The Netflix documentary, Sean Combs: The Reckoning, which includes controversial footage, is still available for subscribers to watch.
