The final episode of Daredevil: Born Again leaves viewers in shock, as Matt deliberately takes a bullet meant for Wilson Fisk, following the escape of Benjamin Poindexter (alias Bullseye) from prison. One might wonder, what could possibly motivate him to safeguard Kingpin?
It’s reasonable to wonder about this, given Daredevil and Kingpin have a history of conflict. Though they might share a tendency towards violence as a means to solve problems, their moral compasses are significantly different.
Following Foggy’s demise, Born Again saw a temporary truce: Matt renounced his vigilante activities, while Fisk embarked on a career as the city’s mayor under public scrutiny. They both agreed to monitor each other, with the understanding that as long as neither broke the rules, everything would remain peaceful.
Ah, I wish things could’ve stayed peaceful, but in Episode 8, I found myself on the edge of my seat as Matt dared to put himself in harm’s way to shield Fisk from Bullseye’s relentless pursuit. Truly a testament to his unwavering loyalty!
Why Daredevil saved Fisk in Born Again Episode 8
Daredevil had two main motivations for rescuing Kingpin: firstly, he’s essentially a noble character, as demonstrated by his act of saving the life of his greatest adversary; secondly, Kingpin was not responsible for the death of Daredevil’s friend Foggy, so he didn’t deserve to be killed at that particular moment.
Previously within the same episode, Matt queries Poindexter about whether Fisk had hired him to kill Foggy. “Perhaps in another scenario, you would be defending me… isn’t that what honorable men do? They protect their sworn adversaries,” he states, and this idea leaves Matt momentarily contemplative.
As a devoted admirer, I’d put it this way: I promised Matt I’d reveal the truth if he sprung me, but instead, I dealt him an unexpected blow, knocking his head against the table.
Eventually, Matt comes to the conclusion that Vanessa was responsible for arranging the hit on Foggy. “I’ve figured it out, it was you who arranged for Foggy to be killed… I can’t fathom why. You’ll answer for your actions,” he states.
Currently, Bullseye takes aim from an elevated balcony. As Bullseye fires, Matt swiftly moves in front of Fisk, shielding him at the last moment. This results in Matt’s body being in Fisk’s hands as they both tumble down to the floor.
Matt and Fisk have a distinct contrast; while Matt might fulfill his promise by giving up the Daredevil identity forever, Fisk would not think twice about allowing harm to come to Matt. It’s the capacity to forgive a grudge and act righteously, regardless of the consequences, that defines a hero – and Matt certainly doesn’t fit the villain mold.
In the final episode, it’s intriguing to see how Kingpin’s bond with Matt might evolve, should it occur at all. Given that Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is currently being filmed, we can assume Matt won’t perish – but if I had to wager, I’d suspect the Kingpin would secretly wish for Matt to remain powerless.
