At the SNL50 event, Aubrey Plaza, who has not been seen publicly since her husband Jeff Baena’s passing, made an appearance. Dressed in a blazer and tie-dye shirt, she introduced Miley Cyrus and Brittany Howard for their performance of “Nothing Compares 2 U”, which was a tribute to both Prince and Sinéad O’Connor. It didn’t take long for the internet to realize why Plaza chose tie-dye that night. During an episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, Plaza revealed the reason behind her tie-dye attire – she and Baena got married in tie-dye pajamas. In 2021, she explained to Barrymore that Jeff became quite fond of tie-dying during lockdown and made them tie-dye pajamas for their wedding.
On January 3, Baena tragically took his own life. In the days that followed, Plaza and Baena’s family jointly issued a statement expressing their gratitude for the outpouring of support, while asking for privacy during this difficult time. Unfortunately, Plaza was unable to present at the Golden Globes on January 5 as planned. Plaza has a special bond with Saturday Night Live, having interned there during the 2004-2005 season and also participating in the NBC page program the following year. She even wore her page uniform again when she hosted the show in 2023. On Sunday night, it wasn’t just Plaza who turned up for Lorne Michaels; Jack Nicholson made his first public appearance since 2023, introducing Adam Sandler.
