The Backrooms started as a spooky online story that went viral in 2019. Originally posted anonymously on 4chan, it describes a seemingly endless maze of old, yellow office rooms that you enter by glitching out of the real world – a phenomenon called ‘noclipping’.
It all started as this really cool idea that people began building on together – creating stories about different “levels,” strange creatures, and how to survive. But honestly, it didn’t really explode until 2022 when this creator, Kane Pixels – whose real name is Alex Parsons – started posting these super creepy, found-footage-style short films. Using Blender, a teenage filmmaker brilliantly recreated the unsettling atmosphere of the Backrooms with a retro, lo-fi style, all while telling an original story. His videos have gone viral, earning millions of views and sparking a demand from fans for a Hollywood series or movie adaptation.

A24 has officially started production on a horror film based on the popular online creepypasta, ‘The Backrooms,’ with Kane Parsons directing. Following an initial glimpse of the film’s signature yellow wallpaper, the first trailer has been released, and it’s genuinely terrifying.
The teaser trailer succeeds by building atmosphere instead of revealing plot details. The camera smoothly descends through different areas before arriving at the Backrooms, which, despite a change in visual style, are still immediately identifiable.
The trailer has generated a lot of buzz online. One viewer commented on the atmospheric sound design, saying it gave them “goosebumps.” Others praised the film’s production company, A24, and celebrated the director, Kane, for making his feature film debut at just 20 years old.

Okay, so from what I’ve heard, the new movie is about this therapist whose patient just… disappears into another dimension! Apparently, she has to go after him herself to try and rescue him. They’re keeping most of the story secret for now, but that’s the basic idea – a therapist diving into a crazy, unreal world to save a patient.
This idea opens up opportunities for a story focused on the characters, building on the existing A-Sync plot. Fortunately, Parsons is returning as director, and he consistently creates high-quality work, so we can expect a fantastic result.
