The recent acquisition of Electronic Arts has created uncertainty about the fate of its various game franchises. Experts suggest that some of these brands may be sold to reduce the company’s debt. The possibility of selling off Mass Effect and the entire BioWare studio is also being discussed.
Who could buy BioWare?
It’s clear that BioWare’s newest games haven’t lived up to what people hoped for. Many wouldn’t be shocked if EA decided to sell the studio to get money quickly. Mark Darrah, a former creative director at BioWare, recently shared his thoughts on this in a new video. He mentioned several companies that could potentially be interested in buying BioWare in the comments section of that video.
The list features four major companies. Darrah believes the Mass Effect studio is most likely to be acquired by either Sony or Microsoft. He also considered Amazon and Disney as potential buyers, but emphasized that those options were less certain.
Darrah’s ideas are logical and sound. Microsoft currently works with EA, providing EA Play as part of its Game Pass subscription. However, it’s uncertain whether Microsoft is prepared for another large purchase like this, particularly considering the recent reductions in its workforce at various development studios.
I’ve always loved what Sony does with single-player games – it’s something BioWare is famous for too. Honestly, a new Mass Effect being exclusive to the PS5 would be huge for Sony. And it’s interesting that Amazon is getting involved as well, they’re actually making a TV series based on the game right now!
However, EA still has the option of continuing to own BioWare and all of its game series. It’s important to remember that the company’s new leadership intends to “significantly cut costs,” especially by utilizing AI. What effect this will have on the future Mass Effect 5 is currently unknown.
