Who are Fox Mask and Kotoyuki in Silent Hill f?
Foxes have a long history in Japanese culture, so it’s not surprising to see one featured in the game *Silent Hill f*. The enigmatic Fox Mask appears every time you enter the Dark Shrine. It initially seems like a helpful guide, but this character is actually much more unsettling than it appears.
As the story unfolds, it’s revealed that Fox Mask is actually Hinako’s childhood friend, Tsuneki Kotoyuki. A flashback shows that he was bitten by a fox, and Hinako tried to help him, but she also defended the fox itself. This incident marked the start of the strange events that follow.
Kotoyuki left town, but he and Hinako continued to write to each other. However, he had changed significantly, now influenced by the nine-tailed fox god of Ebisugaoka. As revealed in the ending of *The Fox Wets Its Tail*, he hoped to marry Hinako and spent years studying how to win her over. Unfortunately, she turned him down, which ultimately led to their confrontation.
I’m really getting into the story of Kotoyuki! “Silence Ending” gives us a lot more background – it turns out he’s connected to the Kyubi clan, which is a huge reveal! It also explains why he’s being pressured to marry Hinako, who has these amazing divine powers, and how he’s struggling with what he actually feels about everything. It’s adding so much depth to his character!
