Godzilla and King Kong now face a surprising new enemy. This story bridges the gap between films in the MonsterVerse series. While set just before the events of 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, it also subtly lays the groundwork for future adventures with Godzilla, Kong, and the other Titans.
The series has revealed the character played by Amber Midthunder is named Isabel Simmons, and she’s linked to a significant villain within the MonsterVerse. As the second season continues, Isabel appears to be setting herself up as a potential new human enemy for Godzilla and King Kong in a future MonsterVerse movie, and her role could be crucial to the franchise’s direction.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Just Introduced a New Human Villain
Fans of the MonsterVerse will likely know the name Simmons, as it belongs to the CEO of Apex Cybernetics. In Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), Walter Simmons and his daughter, Maia, create a plan to protect the world from giant monsters. But it turns out they’re motivated by profit, and their actions actually unleash a far more dangerous enemy: Mechagodzilla.
Let me tell you, when Isabel Simmons showed up in Season 2, Episode 6 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, my immediate reaction was skepticism. The show quickly establishes she comes from a family of bad guys, so when she starts flirting with Kentaro Randa, you just know something’s off. She’s clearly hiding something, and the way she initially keeps her identity under wraps only fuels that feeling. It doesn’t take long for her to slip up, though, and that’s when Kentaro starts to get suspicious – and rightfully so. Knowing what we know about the Simmons family, this is just the beginning of a whole web of deception. Isabel is definitely shaping up to be a compelling, and likely ruthless, new antagonist for Monarch.
Isabel’s arrival happens after two seasons of Monarch establishing Apex Cybernetics as a major threat. It’s now obvious that Apex is only interested in capturing kaiju to benefit themselves, with little concern for actually helping anyone. If Walter Simmons is controlling his younger daughter as much as he controlled Maia, it’s clear he’s simply being used as a tool.
Instead of her father, Isabel Simmons should be established as the primary villain in upcoming stories. The recent film Godzilla vs. Kong introduced Amber Midthunder’s character in a way that strongly suggests she will become a villain, setting the stage for a major conflict with Godzilla and Kong.
Godzilla vs. Kong Lays the Groundwork for the MonsterVerse’s Next Villain
This story takes place several years before the events of Godzilla vs. Kong, which are expected to happen around 2024. This allows viewers to meet Isabel Simmons before a particularly difficult time in her life. While Amber Midthunder’s character isn’t physically in Godzilla vs. Kong, the film essentially explains how she becomes a villain, setting her up for more antagonistic roles in future installments.
Walter and Maia Simmons are the main human villains in Godzilla vs. Kong. They manage to activate Mechagodzilla, but this ultimately leads to their downfall. Shortly after bringing the mechanical monster online, Walter is killed by it when Mechagodzilla destroys his observatory. This leaves Apex Cybernetics without a leader and Isabel Simmons without her father.
Isabel’s sister, Maia, suffers a tragic fate just moments after their father. While exploring the Hollow Earth, Maia turns against her team, revealing her selfish side and trying to steal a powerful ancient artifact. As she flees in a high-speed hovercraft, she provokes Kong by shooting at him. In response, the giant gorilla destroys the hovercraft with his bare hands, killing Maia and everyone on board.
Isabel Simmons experienced a devastating day, losing both her father and sister. On top of this personal tragedy, her family’s business and good name were ruined, fueling a deep-seated rage against those responsible. Though we don’t see it happen directly, Isabel’s transformation into a villain unfolds through the events of Godzilla vs. Kong. The series Monarch shows us her life before these losses, hinting at an even darker path she’s destined to take.
How Amber Midthunder’s New Character Will Change the MonsterVerse
Isabel Simmons might only play a role in the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters series, but it’s more probable she’ll become important throughout the entire MonsterVerse. Following the deaths of her father and sister in Godzilla vs. Kong, she’s now in line to lead Apex Cybernetics. Driven by anger towards the monsters that killed her family, Isabel would be…
The year 2027 could be the ideal time for the last remaining Simmons family member to finally get revenge on Godzilla and Kong. Using what’s left of Apex’s resources, Isabel would dedicate everything to destroying the kaiju. She might even create a new Titan threat, just like her father did, setting the stage for the next film’s conflict.
I really hope Isabel stays involved with the Monarch series – it’s clearly doing so well and has a bright future! Given how the show plays with time, I think they could easily move the story forward a few years. It would be a fantastic way to continue Isabel’s journey after the events of Godzilla vs. Kong, and finally show us how she’s coping with losing Walter and Maia. It feels like a natural fit for the show’s style and would allow them to seamlessly pick up her story.
Amber Midthunder will definitely be back, and while her goals are currently a mystery, it seems likely she’ll become an antagonist as the season progresses. Many questions remain about her character, such as whether she’s working with her family and Apex, or if she has her own agenda for befriending the Randas. We can expect some of these questions to be resolved before the season ends in May.
Isabel Simmons’ arrival signals an exciting new direction for the MonsterVerse, introducing a character who could become a major enemy to Godzilla, King Kong, and all the Titans. Driven by the loss of her father and sister, Isabel will likely seek revenge on the Titans, potentially leading her to operate outside of the Monarch organization and into future films like Godzilla x Kong: Supernova.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters airs new episodes on Fridays, exclusively on Apple TV.
Godzilla x Kong: Supernova hits theaters on March 26, 2027.
