Everyone wants to know: does anyone important die in the final episode of Stranger Things Season 5? The last episode is now available on Netflix, and the answer might not be what you expect.
The group from Hawkins has been getting ready for a major showdown with Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), ever since Holly Wheeler (Nell Fisher) and her schoolmates became his latest targets.
According to Dustin, the Upside Down isn’t a separate dimension, but rather a connection—a kind of bridge—made of a special, unusual substance. This bridge links Hawkins to a terrifying place he calls the Abyss, which is where creatures like the demogorgons and the Mind Flayer originally come from. It’s also where Eleven sent Vecna a long time ago.
Holly is one of twelve children Vecna plans to use to connect the Abyss with our world, and the heroes will need help from absolutely everyone to defeat him. Be warned – spoilers follow! – but do any of the main characters die trying?
Who dies in the Stranger Things Season 5 Episode 8?
The season 5 finale of Stranger Things, titled ‘The Rightside Up’, features Eleven making a huge sacrifice to end the government’s program of creating superpowered children. While we don’t actually see Eleven die, which leaves the door open for her potential return.
This marks the last appearance of the character Kali, and she isn’t shown reuniting with the group in the final moments of the season. Regarding confirmed deaths in the Season 5 finale, El’s sister, Kali (played by Linnea Berthelsen), is killed in a shooting by one of Dr. Kay’s soldiers.
It wasn’t a shock to see Vecna defeated. While the group in Hawkins battled the Mind Flayer, Eleven and Will combined their abilities to break through to Vecna, even though he was hidden behind a rock. Ultimately, it was Joyce who delivered the final blow, using an axe to sever his head.
The group returned to the real world, only to find Dr. Kay and her team waiting for them. Luckily, a bomb exploded, destroying the portal to the Abyss. However, El stepped into the collapsing gateway, determined to finally stop everything.
At the end, Mike shares with his friends that he prefers to imagine she’s in a peaceful, faraway place where she’s safe from harm.
