Season 5 of Stranger Things marks the start of the final chapter for the group of friends in Hawkins, launching them into a full-scale war with Vecna. Netflix warns that no character is guaranteed to survive. Here’s a look at who doesn’t make it through Volume 1 – be warned, major spoilers follow!
The new season begins 18 months after the events of Season 4. The town of Hawkins is under strict military control, and Vecna (played by Jamie Campbell Bower) appears to have vanished. However, when Holly Wheeler (Nell Fisher) is abducted by a Demogorgon, it signals that Vecna is preparing to return and unleash his power.
The creators of the show cleverly build on the backstory of Vecna and the Upside Down, hinting at connections to Madeleine L’Engle’s science fiction novel A Wrinkle in Time and also offering a surprising twist on a beloved Christmas film.
As the story picks up speed over the four episodes, it becomes obvious Vecna is determined to cause a lot of destruction. Here’s a list of the characters who don’t survive in Stranger Things Season 4.
Nobody dies in Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 1

Despite the high stakes, no major characters die in the first part of Stranger Things Season 5. However, the show remains intense and frightening. In a particularly shocking scene in Episode 2, the Demogorgon attacks Karen Wheeler (Cara Buono), severely injuring her with its claws while trying to kidnap Holly. This moment is one of the most disturbing of the season so far.
Okay, so this thing just yeets her dad, Ted, right through a wall with a golf club! It was wild! Honestly, it was kind of a turning point – Ted finally tried to defend his family. It was a little too late to be a real hero, though, because let’s face it, he didn’t even slow the monster down!
In Episode 4, Hopper (David Harbour) and Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) find themselves in a dangerous situation while infiltrating a military base in the Upside Down. Facing the possibility of Eleven being taken by the military’s scientists, Hopper reveals he’s secretly wearing a bomb vest as a desperate plan to rescue her.
Luckily, things don’t end so tragically, even though he delivers a heartfelt speech to Eleven, professing his love and appearing prepared to sacrifice himself. In the end, his sacrifice isn’t necessary, and they realize Kali (Linnea Berthelsen) is being held captive by Dr. Kay (Linda Hamilton) within the base – a surprising turn of events!
While we wait to see if any characters will die in the final part of Stranger Things Season 5, here’s a look at a popular theory about Eleven’s biological father, predictions for how the series might end, and some top Netflix show recommendations for what to watch afterward.
