Cristóbal Tapia de Veer, renowned as the composer of “The White Lotus” on HBO, has announced that he won’t return for Season 4.
In an interview with The New York Times, a three-time Emmy award recipient shared that he and show creator Mike White had contrasting ideas about the theme song for the series. This disagreement surfaced from the beginning of the show in Season 1 and became more pronounced during the production of the ongoing third season. For the first two seasons, the eerie theme music composed by Tapia de Veer helped establish an unsettling mood with its unusual elements such as a repeating “ooh-loo-loo-loo” chorus. However, these “ooh-loo-loo-loos” were eliminated for Season 3, causing some bewilderment among viewers.
For this season, the composer indicated that White intended the music to serve as “backdrop tunes” or songs reminiscent of those played in Ibiza clubs with a relaxed, sensual atmosphere, devoid of the usual “ooh-loo-loo-loos.” However, the theme song for Season 3 transitioned into a more conventional lounge melody without these distinctive sounds, sparking debate among fans of the show.
Tapia de Veer shared with The Times that she had communicated to the producer about the possibility of sharing the extended version featuring the ‘ooh-loo-loo-loos’ at some point, as listeners might be amazed to discover it was part of the original plan. The producer agreed to this idea, but later, Mike decided to omit that segment, as he wasn’t pleased with the decision.
At that moment, our final argument seemed to be in the past as far as I could tell. So, he was simply refusing any suggestions,” he added, with EbMaster reaching out to HBO for clarification.
Tapia de Veer shared with the team a few months prior that she would not be returning and was departing from the show. She opted not to inform Mike immediately; instead, she intended to do so at the last minute for maximum impact. However, she did disclose her decision to the editorial team, music editor, producer, and others involved. Unfortunately, word got back to Mike eventually.
Tapia de Veer admitted to receiving numerous complaints regarding this season’s score, so he uploaded an uncensored version of the tune onto YouTube. Additionally, he likened his journey on the program to a classic “rock ‘n’ roll band saga.
He stated, “This feels reminiscent of a past rock band, where the guitarist and I had absolutely no musical connection.
He added a light-hearted comment, likening his professional bond with White to the iconic 1978 French film “The Birdcage,” featuring Michel Serrault and Ugo Tognazz.
Tapia de Veer explained that the relationship between Albin and Renato in the show mirrors a classic dynamic – Albin plays the leading role, similar to a star, while Renato acts as the producer, ensuring everything runs smoothly to prevent Albin from becoming overly anxious or stressed.
This coming Sunday is when the final episode of “The White Lotus” Season 3 will be aired, lasting approximately 90 minutes as per the HBO schedule. The star-studded cast for this season includes Parker Posey, Walton Goggins, Jason Isaacs, Michelle Monaghan, Leslie Bibb, Natasha Rothwell, Carrie Coon, Scott Glenn, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Aimee Lou Wood, Sarah Catherine Hook, Sam Nivola, and a member of the band Blackpink named Lisa.
