Starting a new game in Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault, you’ll need to pick one of four weapons. This choice matters because you’ll use that weapon for quite a few runs before you can unlock the others. This guide will help you decide which weapon is the best to start with, so you don’t get stuck with one you don’t like!
Merchant’s Sword
The sword is a well-rounded weapon that has a four-part attack. The last hit in the sequence is a strong finishing blow. Will’s special attack is a spin that damages enemies all around him. If you use the special attack after hitting three times, it becomes an even more powerful finisher.
Merchant’s Large Sword
The Large Sword is powerful but slow. Its standard attacks are a three-hit combo that gradually wears down your weapon’s sharpness. You can use a quick, weaker special attack to regain some sharpness. Keep in mind that the sharpness meter is divided into sections, and losing sections means your attacks will do less damage.

Merchant’s Spear
The Spear excels at long-distance attacks, but its strikes are very focused. Its basic attack creates Spearheads, and after four attacks, it releases three. The Spear’s special ability lets you call these Spearheads back to you, damaging any enemies they pass through.
Merchant’s Gauntlets
Gauntlets are the fastest weapons, though their regular attacks don’t do a lot of damage – they’re mainly for building up a power meter. Their special attack is slow but powerful, and filling the meter triggers Berserk, which makes you attack even faster and with more force.
Which weapon should you choose?
Okay, so after playing a bunch with the different starting weapons in Moonlighter 2, I gotta say the Large Sword really stood out to me early on. Yeah, it swings a little slower, but honestly, the extra damage is totally worth it. And the best part? You still have your gun for those times when you need to quickly take down enemies before a big sword swing can land. You can unlock all the other basic weapons just by farming materials from monsters in the first area, Kalina, so it’s not like you’re stuck with it forever.
