Square Enix’s Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is now available on Xbox Series X|S as a Play Anywhere game, following an update for Nintendo Switch and a significant patch. Having thoroughly reviewed Final Fantasy IX for its 25th anniversary, the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series, Chrono Trigger for its 30th anniversary, and Triangle Strategy, I’ve now taken another look at Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven across all available versions. I compared how each version looks and performs, as well as their features and loading times, on different platforms.
In this article, I’ll be discussing Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven across several platforms: the Switch, a potential Switch 2 edition, Steam (played on the Steam Deck), Xbox Series X, Xbox on PC (using the ROG Ally), PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4 (through its demo on PS5). It’s important to note that this feature is specifically about Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven and not the first game in the series, which is also available on consoles, PC, and mobile.
Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven release timeline
Let’s start with a look at when Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven was released on different platforms, from the very first launch to the latest one, before we dive into the various versions and how they differ.
- October 2024: Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, a full remake of Romancing SaGa 2, releases on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Steam.
- July 2025: Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven Nintendo Switch 2 Edition releases with an upgrade path for existing Switch owners.
- September 2025: Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven arrives on Xbox platforms as a Play Anywhere title for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC.
Following the releases of Romancing SaGa 2 and Romancing SaGa 3, Square Enix made those games available on nearly every gaming system. However, more recently, some SaGa titles haven’t launched on Xbox or mobile platforms initially. Now, with the release of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven on Xbox, this incredible remake of a classic RPG is available on all current platforms except mobile. Considering that recent SaGa projects have been released on mobile devices, I anticipate Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven will eventually come to iOS and Android, and I’ll update this article with my thoughts on the mobile version when it does.
Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven feature differences across platforms
Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is now consistent across all platforms, with every version having the latest 1.1.0 update. The Xbox and Nintendo Switch 2 Editions launched with this update, and the PS5, PS4, Switch, and PC versions received it in an update back in July. Any remaining differences between the console and PC versions of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven are due to features unique to each platform or technical limitations. Here’s a list of those platform-specific features:
- Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven on Switch: Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven was the most-polished SaGa release on Switch 1 with good performance and visuals for the hybrid console all things considered when played both docked and handheld. In addition to not suffering from major issues, this version also has a paid upgrade option if you own a Nintendo Switch 2 with save data carrying over.
- Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven Nintendo Switch 2 Edition: Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven Nintendo Switch 2 Edition improves on the Nintendo Switch version with a big visual and performance upgrade. It also lets you bring your save data back and forth across Switch versions.
- Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven on PS5 and PS4: Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven on PS5 and PS4 feature Trophy support, activity card tracking on PS5, cross buy, and also Remote Play support.
- Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven on Xbox: Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven on Xbox is a Play Anywhere title letting you access it on your Xbox Series console and Windows 11 device with saves syncing across. It also supports Quick Resume and has achievements.
- Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven on Steam: The Steam version of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven supports much higher frame rates than the consoles and it also plays perfectly on Steam Deck and PC handhelds with Steam Cloud support and achievements.
Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven visuals and performance differences across PS5, Xbox, Switch 2, PC, PS4, and Switch
Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is currently the most refined and modern SaGa game available on both consoles and PC. Although other releases like SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered run smoothly on all systems, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is a complete 3D remake built in Unreal Engine, designed for various consoles and PC. Fortunately, Square Enix and developer xeen created a game that not only performed and looked great on PS5 and PC, but also pleasantly surprised me with its Nintendo Switch version last year. I hadn’t gotten around to playing the PS4 version until recently, but Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven has always been an RPG I’ve suggested to others, no matter what platform they use. For anyone who hasn’t experienced it yet, and for those who own the game on multiple platforms, I’ll be detailing the visual and performance variations across PS5, PS4, Xbox, PC, Switch, and Switch 2 in this article.
Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven aims for 30fps on the Nintendo Switch, while achieving 60fps on all other consoles. The PC version offers even more flexibility, allowing players to choose from various frame rate targets, including an unlimited option. I tested it on both my Steam Decks and ROG Ally, and both handled it at 60fps (the LCD Steam Deck) or even faster. When it comes to consistent performance on consoles, the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 (played on PS5), and Xbox Series X versions are the most reliable. Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition still uses dynamic scaling and similar level of detail (LOD), but it looks noticeably improved on the Switch 2 compared to playing the original Switch version without any enhancements.
PS5, Xbox Series X, PS4, Switch 2, and Switch Docked compared

Just so you know: I recorded gameplay of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven on the PS5, the PS4 demo on PS5 and Xbox Series X, and both versions of the Switch (docked) using a 4K capture card. Then, I took three screenshots from each platform and cropped them to clearly show the visual differences between them.
The Switch 2 Edition generally achieves 60fps during gameplay, based on the portions I replayed for comparison between Switch versions. However, the frame rate can dip slightly in more demanding areas. These drops are less apparent when playing in handheld mode on the Switch 2. Currently, version 1.1.0 is the newest update for all platforms, but it unfortunately still contains a few bugs. One issue is that the motion blur toggle doesn’t always function as expected, requiring you to enable or disable it and then adjust another setting to ensure it saves correctly. I encountered this same bug on the Xbox Series X as well.
Currently, the PC version of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven remains the smoothest to run, with devices like the Steam Deck achieving over 60fps. It’s surprising that the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Switch 2 editions didn’t include an option to play at 120fps. Aside from a few small performance hiccups, the Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is a significant improvement over the original Switch version, making it a great purchase for on-the-go gaming. Although it uses dynamic resolution, the game looks fantastic on the Switch 2’s screen-even compared to the Steam Deck, which maintains a higher and more stable frame rate.

Just so you know: I took screenshots of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven on the Steam Deck and ROG Ally through Steam, saving them as PNG files. For the Switch and Switch 2 handheld versions, I used the system’s built-in capture feature, as there isn’t a way to capture gameplay on the handheld Switch 2 yet.
When it comes to how the game looks, the PC offers the best experience for Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, followed closely by the PS5 and Xbox Series X. The Switch 2 Edition is a significant improvement, though it could benefit from anti-aliasing or improved post-processing. Hopefully, the few performance hiccups will be fixed in a future update. If you have newer hardware, I wouldn’t recommend playing the PS4 or the original Switch versions – the improvements, particularly in loading times on the PS4 (as discussed below), are substantial. The Switch 2 version looks fantastic on a 1440p monitor, but adding some anti-aliasing would have reduced the jagged edges visible on characters and in the environment. It really would have made a difference.
I want to emphasize that even with some slight differences and small technical problems on the Switch and Switch 2, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is a fantastic game on all platforms – consoles and PC, including handheld devices. I’m hoping the developers continue to release patches to fix these minor issues. It’s truly a great experience!
Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven load times across Switch 2, PS5, Steam, Xbox, Xbox on PC, Switch, and PS4
When checking how long it takes to load Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, I timed how long it took to reach the title screen from the start and also how long it took to load a saved game and regain control of the character. To make things faster, I repeatedly pressed the A/X/B buttons on all platforms. For this test, I had the game installed in several places: on the internal storage of my PS5, the PS4 demo on an external hard drive connected to my PS5, the Switch version on an SD card in my Switch OLED, the original Switch version on the internal storage of a second Switch (before a compatibility update), the Xbox version on the internal storage of my Xbox Series X, the Xbox PC version on the internal storage of my ROG Ally, the Steam version on the ROG Ally’s internal storage, and finally, the Steam version on the internal storage of my Steam Deck OLED.
Platform / Test | Dashboard to title | Loading a save |
Switch | 26 | 24-25 |
Switch on Switch 2 | 15 | 9 |
Switch 2 Edition | 12-13 | 10-11 |
Steam Deck | 17 | 7-8 |
ROG Ally Steam | 10 | 6-7 |
ROG Ally Xbox | 30-35 | 5-6 |
Xbox Series X | 18-19 | 5-6 |
PS4 | 12-13 | 20 |
PS5 | 5 | 4-5 |
Just a quick note: All the loading times mentioned are measured in seconds. The performance figures for the Switch running on Switch 2 are based on data collected *before* the 1.1.0 update. However, all other data reflects the latest versions of the game on all platforms.
As you can see, the PS5 version consistently loads the quickest. The Switch version running on Switch 2, and the dedicated Switch 2 Edition, are also noticeably faster than the original Switch version or the PS4 version when using an external hard drive. After testing numerous games with PC versions on Xbox, I’m hoping Microsoft can improve the syncing and startup times, as every game launches much faster on Steam compared to the Xbox or Microsoft Store versions. With the exception of the Switch and PS4 versions, all versions offer quick loading times during gameplay, and the PS5 version is the fastest overall.
Which version of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is the best?
Considering how the game looks, runs, and loads, the PC version of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is the best, closely followed by the PS5 version if you’re playing on a TV or monitor. For playing on the go, the Steam version on the Steam Deck OLED and ROG Ally offer the smoothest gameplay. If you prioritize sharper graphics and don’t mind a few small performance hiccups, the Switch 2 version is a good choice. The ROG Ally also provides 1080p resolution and consistently high frame rates, though its screen isn’t quite as good as the Steam Deck OLED.
Beyond those points, every platform has a few small drawbacks, but none offer a truly bad experience at the moment. However, I feel the versions for PS4 and Switch 1 aren’t quite as good right now. When I tested Triangle Strategy and Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, the Switch versions had problems with blurry visuals at higher resolutions or slower performance. With Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, you’ll notice some minor performance hiccups and slightly rougher edges on Switch 2, but it’s still a very enjoyable game. The Xbox Series X version just has a slow initial loading time, which you can bypass using Quick Resume. Just be aware that Quick Resume can cause problems if you switch between playing on a PC handheld and syncing back. I personally encountered a few issues with that.
Which version of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven should you buy today?
Since everyone values different things, I’ll now outline the pros and cons of each release of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven. This will wrap up this article: below.
- Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven Strategy on Switch: The original release is still solid on Switch both docked and handheld, but it isn’t the best way to play it. Thankfully a Switch 2 Edition paid upgrade is available at $9.99 with save data carrying over. You could also just play the Switch version on Switch 2 and benefit from faster loading through backward compatibility if you’d like, but the visuals are definitely not ideal on the 1080p screen handheld. I definitely recommend upgrading, but the Switch version lets you also own a physical copy of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven since it has no Switch 2 Edition physical release right now.
- Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven on Nintendo Switch 2: If you upgrade or buy this version directly on the eShop, you get a fantastic handheld version and a great docked experience that only suffer thanks to some jagged edges and minor performance issues. This is still one of the best upgrades for a Switch 1 game on Switch 2.
- Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven on Steam: If you play on Steam Deck or PC in general, this is the only version you should consider. It plays fantastic on Steam Deck out of the box and is a very good PC release with support for much higher frame rates than the PS5 and Xbox versions.
- Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven on PS5: If you want to play on your TV, care about trophy support, and don’t care about portable play (unless you stream to a PlayStation Portal or phone), this is the version to get. It is also the fastest version when it comes to load times above all other systems.
- Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven on Xbox: If you have access to a PC handheld or play on Xbox Series consoles and PC, the Play Anywhere feature is a big selling point in addition to the Quick Resume feature on Xbox, but the longer initial load times thanks to the syncing holds this version back a bit.
Hopefully this guide helped you figure out which platform is best to play Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven on. If you’re new to the game, I suggest trying the demo first. Just be aware that the demo available on the Switch eShop is the original Switch version, not the newer Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is one of Square Enix’s strongest and most unique RPGs in recent years, and it’s fantastic that it’s available on so many platforms. I’m looking forward to a potential mobile release so I can try it on iPhone and iPad. No matter where you choose to play Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, you’re in for a really good experience.
You can now play Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC (through Steam and Xbox on PC). You can find our review of the game here. Additionally, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is available on Nintendo Switch 2.
