Where is Tyria Moore now? Update on Netflix doc Aileen: Queen of the Serial Killers

The new Netflix documentary, ‘Aileen: Queen of the Serial Killers,’ explores the controversial case of Aileen Wuornos. It features previously unreleased footage and offers new perspectives, including details about her relationship with Tyria Moore at the time.

I’ve always been fascinated by true crime, and we’ve heard so many stories about male serial killers. But Aileen Wuornos’ case always stood out to me – it’s rare to see a woman at the center of this kind of story. What really gets people talking, though, isn’t just what she did, but why, and whether it’s possible to even understand her actions. It’s a really complicated case, and it makes you think.

Over the years, many documentaries have explored the difficult life and traumatic experiences that led Aileen Wuornos to become a killer. Her story was even the basis for the 2003 film, Monster, in which Charlize Theron won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Wuornos.

Emily Turner is taking a new look at the Aileen Wuornos case in her book, Aileen: Queen of the Serial Killers. The book aims to provide a deeper understanding of Wuornos, who was convicted of killing several men in Florida between 1989 and 1990. Please be aware that the content may be upsetting to some viewers.

Where is Tyria Moore now?

Tyria Moore, who was in a long-term relationship with serial killer Aileen Wuornos during the time of her crimes, largely disappeared from public view after the case concluded in 1991. Recent reports indicate that the 63-year-old now lives in Pennsylvania with her wife and family.

I first heard about her when I learned she was born in Ohio back in ’62. Later, she ended up moving down to Florida in the mid-80s, and that’s where things got really interesting. She met Aileen Wuornos at a bar in Daytona Beach in ’86, and they quickly fell for each other. They moved in together, and she actually quit her job as a motel maid because Aileen was supporting them both through sex work. It’s a complicated story, but that’s how it all started.

Wuornos and Moore were together for about four years, a period that overlapped with the time Wuornos committed her highway murders in 1989 and 1990. A Netflix documentary highlights the questions surrounding Moore’s knowledge of the crimes. She first said she didn’t know anything about the killings, but later confessed to being told about at least one of them.

On November 30, 1989, Aileen shot and killed Richard Mallory, stating he had attempted to assault her. She later told Moore, “I have something to tell you.” When asked what it was, she confessed to shooting and killing a man that day.

Ultimately, Moore agreed to help the police in return for a promise not to be prosecuted. Investigators put her up in a hotel and had her make several phone calls to Wuornos, which were recorded. During these calls, Moore tried to convince Wuornos to confess. Wuornos repeatedly expressed concern that Moore would face consequences for her involvement.

Wuornos told Moore, “I won’t let you go to jail. I love you, Ty. I’ll confess to everything if that’s what it takes to keep you out of trouble.” On January 16, 1991, she confessed to killing seven men in order to protect Moore.

Moore wasn’t prosecuted for any crimes because she received immunity in return for her testimony. During the 1992 trial, she testified against Wuornos, who became emotional when recordings of their phone conversations were presented.

Following Wuornos’ conviction, Moore stepped away from public life and has remained private ever since. She hasn’t taken part in any media projects, even turning down the opportunity to be involved in the 2003 movie Monster.

How did Aileen Wuornos die?

Aileen Wuornos was put to death by lethal injection on October 9, 2002, at Florida State Prison. She was just the second woman to be executed in Florida since the death penalty was brought back in 1976.

After more than ten years on death row, she was executed for the six first-degree murders she committed between 1992 and 1993, for which she had originally received six death sentences.

Aileen Wuornos was first convicted of murder on January 27, 1992, after the jury deliberated for a little over an hour. A recent true crime documentary about the case examines Wuornos’ claim of self-defense, including her account of the alleged sexual assault she experienced at the hands of the victim, Mallory.

As a true crime fan, I was shocked to learn that the trial didn’t include information about Mallory’s past – he’d actually been convicted of attempted rape and had spent years in a treatment program for sex offenders. It’s just unbelievable! And after Mallory was convicted, Wuornos surprisingly only pleaded no contest to five other murders, and they didn’t even charge her with the seventh one. It all seems so strange and incomplete.

After being sentenced, Aileen Wuornos spent over a decade on death row at Broward Correctional Institution in Florida. While in prison, her mental health problems worsened, causing her to become more unstable and distrustful.

Eventually, she dismissed her lawyer and decided not to challenge her sentence any further. Several documentaries have explored the difficult childhood of Wuornos, detailing how she experienced neglect, abuse, and abandonment from a young age.

What was her last meal?

A cup of coffee was all Aileen Wuornos requested for her last meal. She declined the standard offer of up to $20 for a final meal, saying she didn’t have an appetite. Before her execution, she expressed her eagerness to meet God and seek justice against her abusers.

According to the Guardian, when she was 46 years old, her insistence on facing execution worried her previous lawyers, who believed it indicated she wasn’t mentally capable of firing them or giving up her appeals.

When given a chance to speak one last time, she said she would be returning, comparing herself to a spaceship from the movie Independence Day and referencing a date – June 6th – as her anticipated return, along with a mention of a ‘mothership’ and Jesus.

Aileen Wuornos’s last days were as well-known as her crimes, and the film Aileen: Queen of the Serial Killers showed the complex sides of a woman who was often simply labeled as good or bad.

Rather than focusing on shocking details, director Emily Turner’s documentary explores the true story of Aileen Wuornos, looking at the abuse and exploitation she experienced that led to her crimes.

The show doesn’t ask viewers to excuse the character’s terrible actions, but to try and understand what led her to do them. As Melanie Lynskey explained to Netflix’s Tudum, it’s simpler to label someone who commits awful acts as simply evil, rather than seeing them as a broken person. The show suggests this character wasn’t born a monster, but was created by her circumstances, which is a disturbing idea.

Turner said he hopes the film will provoke different reactions from each viewer, and he even wants people to feel a bit puzzled after watching it.

You can now watch “Aileen: Queen of the Serial Killers” on Netflix. The platform also offers information on other true crime cases, including the Monster of Florence, the current whereabouts of Susan Lorincz, and the story of Adeline Watkins.
