You’re not looking at stand-ins – that’s the actual cast of *Spaceballs 2*. The original *Spaceballs* was a wildly funny parody of *Star Wars*, giving us memorable lines like “Ludicrous Speed,” “Just plain Yogurt,” and the character Lord Helmet. Now, almost 40 years later, the story continues. Details about the new film are scarce – the official announcement simply states the title is likely the movie’s name and the details describe the plot. But one thing is certain: Eugene Moranis is back!
Mel Brooks, the director of the original film, stated in 2014 that he would only make a sequel if Rick Moranis agreed to participate. Moranis, known for his role as Dark Helmet, stepped away from acting in the 1990s following the loss of his wife. *Spaceballs 2* will mark his return to film after a 28-year hiatus, with his last appearance being in the 1996 film *Big Bully*. Here’s a look at who’s returning for the sequel, the new cast members, and the release date.
Who’s returning?
Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet will be accompanied by several original cast members.
Mel Brooks, who created the film and also starred in it as both Yogurt – a character similar to Yoda – and the evil President Skroob, is now 99 years old. Remarkably, he was still acting as recently as 2023, appearing in *The History of the World, Part II*.
➼ Bill Pullman, who played the Han Solo– and Luke Skywalker–esque hero Lone Starr.
Daphne Zuniga returns as Princess Vespa, the pampered and demanding princess of Druidia from the movie *Spaceballs* – a character often compared to Princess Leia.
I’m so excited to hear George Wyner is coming back as Colonel Sandurz! He’s Dark Helmet’s right-hand man, and while he’s not a copy of any specific character from *Star Wars*, he definitely feels like one of those important officers – kind of like General Veers or Admiral Piett, always there supporting the big bad guys.
Who’s joining the cast?
Filming has started, and a recent cast photo released on September 25th reveals some new actors have joined the project, though it’s currently unknown what roles they’ll play.
Josh Gad, known for his role in *Book of Mormon*, will also be a producer on this film. The original *Spaceballs* featured John Candy as Barf, a character resembling Chewbacca, but Candy sadly passed away in 1994. Gad may bring a similar comedic energy to the new movie.
I’m really excited about Keke Palmer potentially joining the Star Wars universe! I’ve been hearing rumors that she could be a brand new character, maybe someone like the new Rey, or – and this is a fun thought – she could take over the role of Dot Matrix, the hilarious C-3PO parody that Joan Rivers played. Either way, I think she’d be amazing!
Lewis Pullman, son of actor Bill Pullman and known for his role in *Thunderbolts*, is being considered to portray Kylo Ren, the son of Han Solo who first appeared in *The Force Awakens*.
And then there’s Barry, played by the uniquely talented Anthony Carrigan. He recently appeared in the movie *Adulthood* with Gad, so it’ll be great to see them work together again. Perhaps his character will be a droid similar to BB-8.
When is the release date?
A sequel to the movie *Spaceballs* is planned for release in 2027. Since the first *Spaceballs* came out on June 24, 1987, Amazon MGM has the chance to release the new film exactly 40 years after the original.
