When The Pitt Season 2 Premieres, I Expect Answers About Two Characters, One Of Whom Isn’t Returning

The second season of The Pitt will begin airing in January 2026, signaling the return of the hospital staff. But when the show comes back, expect some changes: one doctor will be returning after a significant scandal, while another will not be back at all.

When the second shift begins, I need updates on two things: when Langdon will be back, and why Collins left.

Why Is Dr. Langdon Allowed To Come Back?

Langdon and Robby had a very strained relationship at the end of Season 1. Robby had discovered Langdon was stealing medication from the hospital and asked him to leave. However, Langdon soon returned to help when the hospital was overwhelmed with patients after a mass shooting.

At the end of the first season, Langdon’s condition after his hospital stay was really unclear, and it looked like he might lose his job. But Patrick Ball, the actor who plays Langdon, is coming back for season two, so his character will be returning to work. Now, the big question is: what happened to allow him to be cleared to return?

Good news for fans: his return will actually be a significant part of the next few episodes, according to showrunner R. Scott Gemmill in an interview with EW.

The idea came from wanting to bring the Langdon character back, and realistically portraying his recovery. We figured it would take about ten months for him to recover, which put us into the summer. Since the first season ended around Labor Day, we decided to set this story around the 4th of July.

The showrunner shared that when the show returns, Langdon’s problem will be affecting the entire emergency room. This will also mark the first time Dr. Ball and Robby have interacted since the season one finale.

As a huge fan, I’m really excited for the new season, but I’m definitely curious about a few things – especially why they brought Langdon back into the story. There’s a lot to figure out, and I can’t wait to dive in!

Where Is Dr. Collins?

Although it’s unexpected to see Langdon back, I was more surprised to learn that Tracy Ifeachor won’t be reprising her role as Dr. Collins.

So, I was reading up on why Maeve Collins left The Pitt, and Noah Wyle basically said it was a creative choice – they really like the actress who plays her, which is good to hear. John Wells, one of the show’s executive producers and directors, explained it a bit more to THR. He pointed out that people come and go in hospitals all the time, so it makes sense for characters to change too – it keeps things realistic, you know?

The show takes place in a teaching hospital, and typically, residents only stay for four years. We want to be realistic – people don’t work at these hospitals forever, so we’re planning for characters to leave as the show progresses. While we might not cover a full year in each season, we’re committed to portraying the reality of teaching hospitals, which means the cast will naturally change over time.

That’s a valid observation. It’s common for hospital staff to come and go, so this makes sense. Still, after Collins experienced a miscarriage and left her job during the first season, a lot of viewers were curious to find out what happened to her character next.

Honestly, I’m really hoping Season 2 gives us some answers. I’m dying to know what happened to Collins! Just a single line of dialogue explaining where she disappeared to and what she’s been up to would be fantastic. It’s a simple request, but it’s something the show needs to deliver on when it comes back.

Good news! The Pitt will be returning in January, so you won’t have to wait long. Until then, you can rewatch Season 1 on HBO Max and start thinking about the mysteries it holds.
