Nicole Kidman, known for her award-winning performances, is starring in the new Amazon Prime Video crime series, Scarpetta. The show, similar in style to Bosch and Reacher, follows Kay Scarpetta, a brilliant forensic pathologist who solves disturbing crimes in the Southern United States. Outside of work, the series also explores Kay’s complicated relationship with her sister, Dorothy (played by Jamie Lee Curtis), and Dorothy’s daughter, Lucy (Ariana DeBose).
Prime Video will release all episodes of Scarpetta at once, similar to how they released Bosch and the first season of Reacher. With 28 more novels in the popular Patricia Cornwell series, Scarpetta has the potential to run for many seasons if viewers enjoy it and Nicole Kidman remains involved. Good news for fans: details about the show’s potential future have also been revealed.
‘Scarpetta’s Release Schedule, Explained

Amazon Prime Video
The new Prime Video series, Scarpetta, is based on Patricia Cornwell’s popular novels. Starring Nicole Kidman as Kay Scarpetta, the show follows a highly skilled forensic pathologist inspired by real-life medical examiner Marcella Farinelli Fierro. Kay, who is of Italian descent, uses cutting-edge technology to investigate crimes in Florida. But when an old case resurfaces, she’s drawn back to her roots, traveling through the American South – Virginia and South Carolina – to solve a decades-old mystery from the 1990s.
The new Prime Video series, Scarpetta, follows Kay as her life intersects with the complicated relationship between her sister, Dorothy, and Dorothy’s bright daughter, Lucy. The show jumps between the past and present to unravel their connections. Featuring a stellar cast including three Academy Award winners, and with the first two episodes directed by David Gordon Green, Scarpetta is shaping up to be Prime Video’s most high-profile crime drama yet. With Bobby Cannavale and Simon Baker also starring, the impressive cast makes Scarpetta a must-watch when it debuts.
The first season of Scarpetta will consist of eight episodes and will be available on Prime Video starting Wednesday, March 11, 2026. All episodes are expected to be released at the same time, allowing viewers to watch the entire season back-to-back, similar to the popular series Bosch. Unlike some shows designed for quick consumption, Scarpetta is based on a substantial body of work, suggesting it has the potential for a long and lasting run.
Will There Be a Season 2 of ‘Scarpetta’?

Prime Video
Bringing Patricia Cornwell’s Scarpetta to the screen was a long process, but the series now seems promising on Prime Video. Demi Moore was considered for the lead role back in 1992, and Angelina Jolie explored the possibility of a Scarpetta movie franchise in 2009. Given the decades of development, it makes sense that Prime Video committed to two seasons before filming even began.

In February 2023, People magazine announced that Scarpetta has been renewed for a second season. Although the release date for Season 2 and its format (like the 8 episodes released all at once for Season 1) are still unknown, it’s clear that Amazon Prime Video hopes Scarpetta will become a long-running crime drama. Following the successful model of Michael Connelly’s Bosch, and with plenty of novels by Patricia Cornwell to adapt, Scarpetta has a good chance of staying on the air for years to come.
Since 1990, there have been 29 novels featuring the character Scarpetta, and more are still being written. This means there’s a wealth of material for potential stories, investigations, and surprising plot developments, including intense crimes to be solved. The show’s success will likely depend on strong ratings and the continued involvement of stars Nicole Kidman and Julianne Curtis. However, if the premiere on March 11, 2026, goes well, Scarpetta could become a major competitor to other popular Prime Video crime dramas like Reacher, Ballard, and Jack Ryan.
