CD Projekt recently released its financial report for the third quarter of 2025, showing strong performance. Cyberpunk 2077 continues to be the biggest contributor to their revenue, now boasting 35 million players. With a sequel on the way, it’s worth taking a look at what the report revealed about it.
Cyberpunk 2 is gaining momentum, but the release is far away
According to a new report, development of Cyberpunk 2 is moving forward quickly, with the team size growing rapidly. Currently, 135 developers are working on the game, up from 116 in June. The team includes experienced talent, such as a co-creator of Ghost of Tsushima and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, and a developer previously with Insomniac Games.
The project is spearheaded by the team in Boston, with support from other locations. The studio is planning to hire many more people, likely to accelerate development of Cyberpunk 2. They anticipate having around 300 to 400 developers working on the game by the end of 2027.
Don’t expect to see Cyberpunk 2 anytime soon. Job postings suggest the game won’t be released until at least 2028. It’s still very early in development – pre-production only started in May – and CD Projekt Red is currently prioritizing The Witcher 4.
Even though development on Cyberpunk 2 is well underway, details remain scarce. However, thanks to creator Mike Pondsmith, we now know the game will include a brand new city, envisioned as a distorted version of Chicago. Interestingly, Chicago was already destroyed in the Cyberpunk timeline during the 2020s, meaning this new location will likely be very different from the returning city of Night City.
Job postings hint that CD Projekt Red might be planning a multiplayer mode for a future game, something the first game didn’t have. It’s still unclear if Keanu Reeves will return as Johnny Silverhand, but the original creator of the Cyberpunk universe, Mike Pondsmith, apparently has some ideas about how to make that happen.
