Fans of “When Calls the Heart” have received Season 12 as a gift this year, and there’s exciting news ahead – Season 2 of its spin-off series, “When Hope Calls,” is almost upon us.
For more than a decade, the primary series has been airing, accumulating an abundance of characters that could fill a captivating television series. Two sisters, Lillian and Grace, initially debuted in a holiday special and quickly established their longevity… and thus, When Hope Calls was conceived.
Although When Hope Calls takes place during a slightly different timeline compared to Where Calls the Heart, it still follows a familiar pattern. The series features our leading ladies falling for their very own Canadian Mounties, while the small-town day-to-day happenings serve as the pulse of each episode.
Since 2021, it’s been absent from our screens, but now, it’s poised for a grand comeback. However, the second season of “When Hope Calls” might introduce some exciting changes.
When Hope Calls Season 2 release date
Following some mix-ups, it’s now official that Season 2 of When Hope Calls will resume on April 6, 2025, exclusively on Great American Family. Fans who are Pure Flix subscribers can start streaming episodes three days ahead, from April 3.
The go-ahead for Season 2 was given as early as 2021, not long after the broadcast of its two holiday episodes. This means it’ll be more than six years since the premiere of its initial full season.
Initially, there were plans for the second season to premiere in January simultaneously with When Calls the Heart. However, that didn’t happen as expected, and no clear explanation has been provided for this shift in schedule.
You might have observed a shift in the network. Originally, Season 1 was broadcasted on the Hallmark Channel, but the holiday specials moved to Great American Family subsequently. For Season 2, it’s going to stay with Great American Family.
Even though you’re behind, you have the opportunity to watch the entire first season of Hallmark+, including the Christmas special where Grace and Lillian were introduced, as well as the 12 seasons of When Calls the Heart.
Season 2 cast
It’s rumored that Morgan Kohan as Lillian and Ryan-James Hatanaka as Gabriel might return to their roles again, but Jocelyn Hudon as Grace and Greg Hovanessian as Chuck are not expected to appear this time around.
Only Wendy Crewson (as Tess) and Hanneke Talbot (as Maggie) have been officially confirmed to return in the upcoming series, but there’s no news yet about whether Marshall Williams, Neil Crone, or Lori Loughlin will be joining them.
It’s confirmed that several fresh faces will be added to the cast. Cindy Busby takes on the role of Nora, and Christopher Russell portrays a new Mountie named Michael. Interestingly, these two actors have previously starred as romantic leads in four of the channel’s original films together, which are produced by Hallmark.
At Christmas Con 2024, I shared an interesting tidbit – “It might surprise some of you to learn that Cindy and I have collaborated in the past.
We’ve made four movies together. Later, I received an email about a new project, but it seemed I was mistakenly sent a copy (BCC). The project turned out to be a TV show where Cindy Busby was also cast. At that moment, I thought, ‘I need to be a part of this!’
Additionally, Nick Bateman is part of the cast, playing the character Wyatt. Meanwhile, Trevor Donovan will make an appearance in not one but two episodes, portraying the role of Constable Jim Reynolds.
GAF presents Reynolds as a seasoned Mountie residing in Clearwater. This robust individual excels in equestrian activities and physical challenges. Reynolds has built a reputation for his commanding presence and field competence.
Initially, he’ll make an appearance in Episode 3, as “Michael (Russell) and Nora (Busby) come to collect a child entrusted to his care.” Later on, we’ll find him apprehending cattle thieves who are exploiting the Brookfield ranches.
What to expect in Season 2
In the second season of “When Hope Calls,” the storyline is expected to undergo significant changes since our last visit to Brookfield. The focus this time will primarily revolve around a new group of characters, but there will still be references made to Lillian and Gabriel’s relationship.
In their own words, Season 2 of the series acknowledges and honors Lillian and Gabriel, while we’re also introduced to fresh characters who play crucial roles in the orphanage, the kids, the extensive farmlands, and the town of Brookfield.
According to Russell’s hints, there will be a gradual development of romantic feelings between Nora and Michael. He further mentioned that there will be a mix of emotional scenes and family-focused moments, with a strong emphasis on romance. He also suggested that some characters might end up falling in love and possibly sharing a kiss, but he left the specifics open to interpretation.
More details – including the first trailer – will be released closer to the season’s release date.
On April 6, 2025, you can catch Season 2 of When Hope Calls! If you haven’t seen Season 1 yet, it’s currently streaming on the Hallmark Channel.
