Reflect on the joyous moments from Season 8. Following the heartbreaking loss of her husband Jack at the end of Season 5, Elizabeth found herself opening up to love once more. She and Lucas shared a deep connection, falling hard for each other before their relationship ended abruptly in the Season 10 finale.

For Elizabeth, the aspirations and lifestyle requirements she and Lucas hold are significantly disparate. While Lucas is driven by ambitious career goals in the bustling Capital City, Elizabeth remains deeply rooted in her family values and small-town charm of Hope Valley.

Despite secret hopes among fans that they might reconcile someday, the couple parted ways in reality. However, Elizabeth’s budding relationship with Nathan seemingly diminished any chances of a reunion, and When Calls the Heart Season 12 Episode 2 reinforced this split irrevocably.

Lucas’ new love interest is focus of When Calls the Heart Season 12

After hearing about Jack’s uncovered commissioning medal, Elizabeth and Nathan have rekindled their relationship. Meanwhile, Lucas has found a new romantic interest… who just so happens to be an adversary.

As Lucas enters Capital City to finalize his national park blueprints, Edie Martel from the Farmers’ Association confronts him, informing Lucas about issues with his proposals. Her late uncle previously owned a ranch close to where Lucas intends to construct, and his plans potentially eliminate “joint usage” (a beneficial arrangement for farmers).

Edie underlines to Lucas and Edwin that this situation is about people, not politics. The potential closure of ranches could lead to job losses for hundreds and a rise in food prices, leaving Hope Valley in a tough spot.

From the start, there’s a palpable tension between the two characters. As actor Chris McNally hinted about Lucas’ fresh romance, Edie seems to be the perfect fit for this scenario. In other words, we can expect an evolving dynamic from adversaries to lovers… and it promises to be quite dramatic.

When it comes to Elizabeth, McNally believes that their past relationship should remain exactly that – a part of history. Given that Lucas has gone through the turmoil of Season 11 with Jeanette after their breakup, it’s no wonder that this chapter feels long forgotten.

In McNally’s words, “Lucas has consistently believed that Elizabeth’s happiness is most important to him. So, seeing her happy with Nathan provides some comfort for him. He’s genuinely pleased for her, but it’s painful too. However, I don’t believe Lucas sees any way to alter this situation. It seems like the course has been determined; it’s as if the path has already been set.

He’s accepting and finding tranquility with the situation, yet deep down, he wishes things were different for himself. However, ultimately, his feelings for Elizabeth are genuine, and he hopes she finds happiness.
