Sony Pictures Television intends to assume complete distribution of “Wheel of Fortune” and “Jeopardy” as soon as next week, challenging CBS in court over their decades-long partnership on these iconic syndicated game shows.
On February 3rd, Sony Pictures officially notified CBS that they would assume control, starting from the following week, in delivering fresh episodes to the over 200 TV stations nationwide which broadcast their top-rated game shows.
Sony Pictures has updated a lawsuit they initiated in October, accusing CBS of owing money from previous distribution agreements. They assert that CBS exceeded the terms of their distribution contract by setting up licensing deals in Australia and other international markets without Sony’s approval. In October, Sony took legal action against CBS in Los Angeles Superior Court; CBS responded with a countersuit in November.
In a letter dated January 27, 2025, Sony Pictures informed CBS that they would be sending them the episodes for their shows to be aired from February 3 to February 9. They expect CBS to make sure these episodes are correctly distributed to broadcasters. Beginning with the episodes scheduled for airing from February 10 onwards, Sony Pictures will start sending the episodes to the broadcasters directly.
CBS did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
