If you’re having trouble with the Balancers in Elden Ring’s new Forsaken Hollows DLC, learning their weaknesses will significantly improve your chances of defeating them. I really like this boss – it feels like a mix of the Deacons of the Deep from Dark Souls 3 and the Cleanrot Knights from Elden Ring. These glaive-wielding enemies can quickly overwhelm you if you aren’t prepared for a group attack.
Once you’ve defeated all the enemies, they revive like the Abyss Watchers from Dark Souls 3, becoming a stronger, more powerful version with deadlier attacks. All the other enemies will also get back up, so you’ll need to carefully manage both groups – keeping them ‘balanced’ while focusing on the main, most dangerous opponent.
This enemy is challenging but enjoyable to fight. Here’s a breakdown of their weaknesses and some extra advice to help you win if you’re having trouble.
Elden Ring Nightreign Balancers boss weakness and tips

Balancers are especially vulnerable to sleep attacks. You can identify ruins that focus on sleep by looking for the closed eye symbol – you’ll find it when viewing Balancers in the expedition menu. These sleep ruins typically feature a Runebear boss and often give you weapons that can inflict the sleep condition.
You can find items like Soporific Grease and Sleep Pots – which let you add sleep effects to your weapons or throw sleep-inducing projectiles – by breaking containers in the ruins and searching chests in the cellar. Be careful when exploring the new maps, as they also contain sleep cathedrals.
If you’re struggling with Nightreign, Grease or Sleep Pots are your most reliable options. That’s because only one weapon – the Sword of St. Trina – consistently causes sleep. Getting sleep effects can be as difficult as dealing with madness weapons against Libra, as it largely depends on luck – finding the right ruin or, specifically, that sword.
This boss can be tricky to defeat because its weakness isn’t based on elemental affinities. Unlike Gaping Jaw’s vulnerability to poison and Libra’s susceptibility to madness, most Nightlords are simply weaker to specific damage types, not status effects. However, when a boss is weak to a status ailment, that ailment usually has a very focused and powerful effect.
Certain status effects can significantly change how enemies behave during battle. For example, poisoning Gaping Jaw will stun it, forcing it to pause and vomit. Afflicting Libra with madness will stop its spellcasting and trigger a more manageable, though still dangerous, rampage. And putting Balancers to sleep will calm the fight down a bit. Here are a few more helpful hints:
- I haven’t worked out whether the Scholar can link status effects on enemies, but if so, you should be able to sleep all the Balancers at once. Either way, the Scholar is definitely a strong pick for this fight, as linking the Balancers will let you damage them simultaneously. Since the Scholar can upgrade items through use as well, he’ll also be better at using Sleep Pots.
- Due to the number of grab attacks the Balancers do (especially after they buff their attack), and the fact that Undertaker gets a free art cast when she dodges a grab attack, she’s also a strong pick if you’ve cracked those attack timings.
- Remember that killing the central most-aggressive Balancer with the enhanced attacks will stun them all, but before long, it’ll reincarnate as another of the Balancers. With all that in mind, the best tactic is to kite the main one while the rest of the team take out the others.
If you’re using voice communication, let everyone know immediately when the main Balancer switches its focus to a different player. The fight can be hectic, but it’s manageable if you’re aware of who the Balancer is currently targeting.
