Things are changing quickly for the upcoming Ocean’s Eleven prequel! After director Lee Isaac Chung left the project, Bradley Cooper is now reportedly being considered to both write and direct the film. Cooper was already set to star alongside Margot Robbie, who is also producing through her company, LuckyChap Entertainment. This isn’t Cooper’s first experience with a big project – he previously secured the rights to a Leonard Bernstein biopic, a project Jake Gyllenhaal had also been interested in. Carrie Solomon previously worked on the script, but details about the story are still being kept secret.
This would be Cooper’s fourth time directing a film, after A Star Is Born, Maestro, and last year’s Is This Thing On? It would also be the first time he’s directed a movie with a large group of main characters, instead of focusing on just one or two. The big question now is: how many people are in this heist crew?
The popular Ocean’s franchise already includes Ocean’s Eleven, Twelve, and Thirteen – films directed by Steven Soderbergh, with the first being a remake of a classic 1960s movie. A Fourteenth installment is currently in the works, bringing back George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Don Cheadle, Brad Pitt, and Matt Damon. Plus, there’s the critically acclaimed Ocean’s 8, a spin-off led by Sandra Bullock. Many fans believe sequels – Ocean’s 9 and Ocean’s 10 – are deserved, and the fact that they haven’t been made yet is arguably more disappointing than anything that happens on screen.
If Cooper isn’t aiming for a large ensemble, he’ll likely need to cast between one and seven actors and give them a tanned look with makeup and prosthetics. The most straightforward choice would be Rebecca Field, who worked with him on A Star Is Born. But he could also consider past collaborators like Amy Sedaris, Halsey (also from A Star Is Born), or even the Snoopy balloon from Maestro. Or, as a way to make amends for leaving the Wet Hot American Summer sequel, he could hire the whole cast! The goal of their mission? To win us over.
