“What? Why?” Vin Diesel instructed Steven Spielberg on how he should film Saving Private Ryan

At the early stages of his career, Vin Diesel had an opportunity from Steven Spielberg to act in Saving Private Ryan. At that time, his most notable role was in Strays, a film he both directed and wrote. Yet, even with limited experience, Diesel felt bold enough as a filmmaker on the set of Saving Private Ryan to voice his opinions to Spielberg about how a scene from his war movie should be shot.

In a chat with Men’s Health, I shared my insights with Steven Spielberg about the elements he was overlooking to capture striking scenes, particularly the poignant moment when Private Caparzo, who would later become renowned in the Fast and Furious franchise, met his valiant end.

In the interview, Diesel mentioned a conversation he had with Spielberg during the filming of “Saving Private Ryan“:

Vin Diesel: Hey, Steven, where’s your C camera?

Steven Spielberg: What? Why?

Vin Diesel: Put a C camera in that second-floor window.

Following Diesel’s recommendation, Spielberg positioned the camera at the suggested spot by the relatively inexperienced actor – who had only directed one short and one full-length movie before. As Diesel recounted, this shot was deemed suitable by Spielberg for inclusion in the film’s promotional material, thereby validating the advice and demonstrating that the renowned director was open to input from a less experienced colleague, understanding that an unconventional viewpoint could enhance the overall quality of the movie.
