Everyone is currently discussing the TV show Pluribus. As the central mystery – a shared consciousness – becomes more complex, the next episode, set to air this week, promises to reveal more.
Pluribus centers around Rhea Seehorn’s character, one of the rare individuals immune to a virus that has linked all of humanity – but at the cost of personal choice, unique identity, and free thought.
The virus in the show seems to have originated from outer space, but creator Vince Gilligan emphasizes that this doesn’t automatically mean aliens are involved. Fans have come up with many interpretations, seeing it as a representation of things like the rise of artificial intelligence, the divisiveness of modern politics, or even the struggles of addiction.
The show’s writers aren’t revealing much, so it’s up to the viewers to piece together the mystery of Pluribus. We’ll get our next clues in Episode 4.

How many episodes are there?

The first season has nine episodes, but the show isn’t stopping there. Apple quickly approved two more seasons after winning the rights to produce Pluribus.
The first episode, titled ‘We is Us,’ centers around an astronomer’s groundbreaking discovery that drastically changes life on Earth. It introduces Carol Sturka, a grumpy novelist, who is deeply unsettled by this new reality.
The second episode, ‘Pirate Lady,’ features a mysterious person from Carol’s past who helps her adjust to the strange new world. A meeting in Europe brings together a group of strangers, but tensions quickly arise.
Okay, so Episode 3 is called ‘Grenade’. Basically, everyone’s trying to be nice and help Carol, but it’s seriously getting on her nerves. It all builds up to a pretty explosive conversation – literally, it ends with a bang!
In episode 4, titled ‘Please, Carol,’ Carol pushes the limits of this unusually truthful environment, damaging her pride in the process. Meanwhile, someone else discovers they aren’t as isolated as they thought.

What is Pluribus about?

Pluribus tells the story of a deeply unhappy woman who unexpectedly becomes the world’s last hope against a future filled with excessive joy.
Okay, so in this game, I’m playing as Carol Sturka, this author who everyone suddenly decides they need to make happy. It’s wild! The whole world just… changes. Everyone becomes super peaceful, kind, and it’s like we’re all connected, thinking as one. It’s a really strange but kinda cool vibe.
The story carries a hidden message reflecting Vince Gilligan’s views on current society. He explained to ScreenRant that the outcome—whether it’s good or bad, even idyllic—is left for the audience to interpret.
Look, I’m not going to break down exactly how to interpret this, but honestly, I hope people watch it and start thinking, ‘Hey, maybe there’s a different path forward, something other than what’s happening in the US right now.’ It’s about opening minds, you know?
Ultimately, how viewers interpret the show is up to them. As the creator explains, “It’s just television – it’s not meant to solve the world’s problems. But I hope people watch and consider what kind of world they want to live in. We put a lot of effort into making this apocalypse feel unique.”
You can now watch Pluribus on Apple TV. Here’s a look at other highly-rated shows to enjoy this month, plus a rundown of the best TV shows released so far in 2025.
