UpScrolled is a new social media app quickly gaining popularity – it’s even surpassed TikTok in downloads! But what exactly is it?
TikTok has faced increasing scrutiny in the United States over the past year. Concerns about its ownership by the company ByteDance led to threats of a ban, with officials citing potential security risks.
As a huge TikTok fan, I was really worried when it started getting banned in different states! Thankfully, it looks like they’ve found a way to keep the app running in the US. Basically, TikTok sold a stake in their US operations to a new company called TikTok USDS Joint Ventures. Oracle, run by Larry Ellison, now gets a 15% share and is in charge of running TikTok’s algorithm, which seems to have satisfied regulators and stopped the nationwide ban.
Before the recent change in ownership, the app was facing pressure and users were switching to platforms like Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. Now, UpScrolled offers another alternative.
How does UpScrolled work?
UpScrolled is a new app gaining popularity, especially among TikTok users. It functions much like other platforms such as Threads, X, and BlueSky.

UpScrolled goes down due to influx of new users
The app’s recent surge in popularity led to a brief outage on January 26th.
They posted on X that the quick response caused their servers to overload, which was both frustrating and upsetting.
Whoa, things blew up fast! Seriously, you guys flooded our servers so quickly it was kinda crazy – frustrating, yeah, but honestly, really awesome to see so much interest. We’re a small team trying to build something different, something the big companies aren’t focusing on anymore. Right now, we’re running on coffee and pure adrenaline trying to keep up with the demand you created. Thanks for being patient – we’re working hard to get everything running smoothly!

In recent years, many new social media platforms have emerged, often because people have become dissatisfied with the larger, more established apps.
Apps like Threads, Hive, Bluesky, Mastodon, and Lemon8 have already attracted users who previously used X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok.
It remains to be seen just how long UpScrolled will stick around in the thinking.
