Okay, as a huge fan of ‘It: Welcome to Derry‘, I was completely blown away by the finale! They saved the biggest twist for last – it turns out Pennywise (Bill Skarsgard) is basically acting like The Terminator! It also finally explains why the show is jumping back in time for seasons two and three. Seriously, major spoilers ahead if you haven’t watched yet!
The show largely focused on the lead-up to the devastating Black Spot fire of 1962, but its main purpose was to reveal how Pennywise came to be and his deep connection to the town of Derry. The children ultimately learned that Pennywise is trapped there because the Shokopiwah people created a protective barrier around Derry using pieces of the meteorite he arrived in millions of years ago.
The final part of the story focused on rebuilding a protective barrier with a knife Lilly discovered in the sewers. Meanwhile, Pennywise attempted to flee town after taking most of the school’s students captive, including Will Hanlon.
A discussion between Pennywise and Marge revealed something important about the clown: he’s unknowingly acting like The Terminator, drawing inspiration from the film’s relentless pursuit.
Pennywise is going back in time in It: Welcome to Derry to stop the Loser’s Club

Similar to how Skynet hunted Sarah Connor in The Terminator, Pennywise in It: Chapter Two attempts to survive by eliminating the Losers’ Club before they can defeat him. During the confrontation on the frozen river, Pennywise pulls Marge away and refers to her as ‘Marge Tozer’.
That’s right – Marge is the mother of Richie Tozer, one of the members of the Losers’ Club (played by Finn Wolfhard and Bill Hader). Pennywise admits he doesn’t understand time like humans do, experiencing everything all at once. This makes him unsure if the Losers will eventually kill him, or if they somehow contributed to his creation.
Once Pennywise is successfully contained, Marge explains this to Lilly – and to us, the viewers – to set up what the story will focus on next.
She explains that, for him, the past, present, and future are all one continuous experience, and that his death wasn’t an end, but a beginning. She wonders if he perceives time differently than we do – if he can even travel backwards. This leads her to a frightening thought: could he go back in time and harm someone from before our generation, perhaps even our parents?
It: Welcome to Derry Season 2 will go back to Pennywise’s previous hunt in 1935

Since Pennywise doesn’t perceive time like people do, each time he awakens to hunt, he’s reminded that he will eventually die.
He doesn’t just scare children—he actually eats their fear. And on top of that, he’s attempting to prevent the Losers’ Club from ever existing. It just goes to show, even an otherworldly, terrifying clown can handle multiple tasks at once.
Since he’s weakening, Rose tells her group in Episode 5 that this 1962 period has been less intense than those in 1935 and 2008. This could mean Pennywise will become more aggressive as he tries harder to defeat the Losers.
IT: Welcome to Derry Season 1 ends with cameos that lead into It: Chapter Two

Okay, so the ending of It really threw me! Not only did Pennywise have this crazy plan to take us all out like in The Terminator, but the movie also brought back some familiar faces. It was so cool to see young Beverly Marsh again, played by Sophia Lillis! And even more surprising, Joan Gregson was back as Mrs. Kersh, still living in Juniper Hill after what happened with the Deadlights way back in episode seven. It was a really neat touch!
An elderly woman slowly walks down the hallway of the asylum when she’s disturbed by desperate cries coming from a nearby room. Inside, she finds a woman who has died by suicide. The woman’s husband and daughter are grieving, and as the little girl turns around, we see that it’s Lillis playing the character of Bev.
Mrs. Kersh eerily tells Bev that people in Derry never truly die, and smiles strangely as she says it. This scene hints at a later, terrifying encounter where adult Bev (played by Jessica Chastain) returns to her father’s old apartment and finds Mrs. Kersh, who then turns into a monstrous creature and attacks her.
Fans will have to wait to see if Season 2 of ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ includes more appearances from the ‘IT’ films. In the meantime, you can explore other Stephen King TV adaptations, learn how ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ hinted at Pennywise’s backstory three decades ago, and find out why some viewers are disappointed with the Bob Gray flashback.
