In the fifth episode of Invincible Season 4, Tech Jacket removes their mask, revealing a significant departure from the character’s comic book appearance. Creator Robert Kirkman explained the reasoning behind this change.
Okay, so after Mark went to actual Hell, the last scene of episode 4 was crazy! Nolan and Allen the Alien just landed on Earth and basically declared war is coming. And honestly, I feel so bad for Eve – it looks like she’s never going to get to tell everyone she’s pregnant with all this happening!
The most recent episode of Invincible sees Nolan attempting to fix his mistakes. While he doesn’t receive forgiveness, Mark, Allen, and Oliver must work together to combat the threat of the Viltrumite Empire.
In Season 4, Episode 5, we see another intense and violent fight between Mark and Conquest (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). Before that showdown, Allen goes to see Tech Jacket, and Tech Jacket agrees to help in the battle.
What happened to Tech Jacket in Invincible Season 4?

The superhero TV show made a change from the original comic: the character Tech Jacket is now female. In the comics, Tech Jacket is named Zack Thompson, but in the show, she’s Zoe Thompson, and actress Zoey Deutch provides the voice for the character.
Kirkman explained to Den of Geek that the reason for the approach was simple: introducing Tech Jacket directly into the comics would have made him too similar to Mark.
Zack Thompson gains his abilities from a powerful, advanced suit of armor. However, he begins the story as an ordinary high schooler, and physically, he’s quite similar to Mark.
We quickly realized it would be compelling to reimagine the character as female instead of male. We began exploring who Zoe would be as a person, rather than Zach. Kirkman explained that this change opened up some really interesting possibilities for the character.

Zoey Deutch really brings the character to life with her energy and makes a much bigger impact. She’s a fantastic and fun character to work with.
Co-showrunner Simon Racioppa also shared that Robert jokingly insisted they only cast actors whose names matched their characters—specifically, an actor named Zoey for the role. Racioppa quickly clarified that was a joke, and that the actress is truly exceptional.
She immediately understood the role and embodied it well. She’s a true professional, a joy to work with, and brings a wonderful sense of humor to the part – which really fits the character’s personality.
She’s incredibly funny, with fantastic jokes and quick wit, and Zoey consistently delivers those moments. We were thrilled when we hired her for the show.
Tech Jacket origins & powers

Tech Jacket first appeared in his own comic book series in 2001, created by Robert Kirkman and artist E.J. Su. The character, originally named Zack Thompson, is a typical teen who connects with a powerful alien device called the Tech Jacket. He’s similar to Iron Man, but in the world of Invincible.
The Gelderians, a highly skilled but frail race, built this suit to give the wearer incredible powers – super strength, the ability to fly, increased protection, energy blasts, and weapons that change to suit the situation. As Zack uses the suit, it learns and improves, developing new abilities based on the challenges he encounters.
Tech Jacket’s story starts like many superhero origins, but quickly grows to involve huge battles across the galaxy, connecting it closely to the larger Invincible story. He eventually becomes an important supporting character in Invincible, participating in many of the main events.
He’s unique because he’s the only human who fought with the Coalition of Planets during the Viltrumite War. His strength is remarkable – he’s one of the few non-Viltrumites who could actually fight Viltrumite soldiers on equal footing.
The character debuts in Season 3, Episode 7, joining the fight during the Invincible War. Over several days of battle, Tech Jacket defeats the villainous alternate version of Mark, known as Mustachible, and then assists with the aftermath on Earth.
Season 4 finally gives us a good look at the person behind the superhero’s mask. Although we’re still learning about her, her background in the comics hints she could become a key ally in the future.
Because of her experiences in the first Viltrumite War, Tech Jacket will probably be a key player in the new conflict hinted at in the upcoming fourth installment.
Invincible fans are obsessed with Zoe Thompson
While some superhero fan groups are known for being difficult, fans of the show Invincible are overwhelmingly positive about the new, gender-swapped version of the character Tech Jacket.
God bless Zoe Thompson thank you Robert Kirkman shes my new favourite character.

One Reddit user expressed their enthusiasm for the character Zoe Thompson, thanking both the character’s creator, Robert Kirkman, and praising her as a new favorite.
Someone else agreed, saying it was both hilarious and incredibly impressive that this optimistic person had defeated one of their duplicates. Another commenter pointed out that this individual had been raised on the harsh planet Viltrum.
Initially, some people were skeptical, but that changed when they saw Zoe perform. One person admitted, “After hearing about Zach for so long, I was a little annoyed to learn the role would be played by a woman.”
Zoe was fantastic! I really enjoyed her personality and think she’s a wonderful addition to the show. I’m excited to see what she does next.
Someone else commented that they enjoyed Zach’s work and read all the Tech Jacket comics after finishing Invincible, but they weren’t particularly upset about the changes, figuring an adaptation of those comics wasn’t likely anytime soon.

One fan suggested creating a separate comic book series based on Tech Jacket, staying true to the original comics. This would allow for a faithful adaptation of the character while still including the gender-swapped version seen in the Invincible series.
This would be ideal because Tech Jacket wasn’t going to have a major role in Invincible anyway.
People are wondering what her character will be like, and some think she could become romantically involved with Oliver. One person stated, “She’s definitely going to be Oliver’s new love interest.”
However, some people are skeptical, particularly because Oliver is aging so quickly. One person commented, “It doesn’t seem likely. Oliver will only be the same age as Zoe for about a year.”
The sixth episode of Invincible Season 4 will be available on Prime Video on April 8th. While you wait, you can listen to the soundtrack from all four seasons of the show, explore information about the now-difficult-to-find content from the series, and find out what’s known about a possible Invincible movie.
