What happened to Henry in Run Away? Netflix ending explained

Netflix has adapted Harlan Coben’s novel, Run Away. Though the story wraps up most of its mysteries, one question lingers: what truly happened to Henry Thorpe? A subtle clue holds the key to understanding his fate.

Harlan Coben began a partnership with Netflix in 2018 to turn his popular novels into TV series, and this agreement was renewed in 2022 due to its success. With 37 books already published and more on the way, Coben’s stories consistently attract a large audience when adapted for the screen.

Netflix began adapting Harlan Coben’s novels with the series Safe in 2018, and has since released twelve of his stories as original programs. Several of these, like Fool Me Once and Missing You, have premiered on New Year’s Day.

I just finished watching ‘Run Away,’ and it’s a real rollercoaster! It follows Simon Green, played by James Nesbitt, as he desperately tries to find his missing daughter, Paige (Ellie de Lange). But the search quickly gets complicated when he stumbles into a murder investigation and uncovers secrets that could tear his whole family apart. Be careful though, because I’m about to warn you – there are spoilers ahead!

What happened to Henry in Run Away?

The story suggests Henry is the half-sibling of others fathered by Casper Vartage, the leader of a cult who was killed by Dee Dee and Ash.

This also happens in the novel Run Away. Dee Dee hints at what will happen to him when Ash worries about being discovered and the police uncovering the Shining Truth cult’s schemes.

Dee Dee is involved in a cult and manipulates her former foster brother, Ash, into committing murders for the cult’s leader, Casper, who his followers call ‘The One’.

After carrying out several murders, Dee Dee informs Ash that Casper (Ken Bones) is near death. She explains that his two sons, referred to as The Visitor and The Volunteer, will inherit both the Shining Truth organization and his vast fortune.

It seems Casper has had many children over the years. With his other sons, he arranged for them to be adopted, and sadly, he told the mothers that their babies hadn’t survived.

She explained that the document detailed how Shining Haven and all of The One’s property would be split equally between his sons. Now, as he nears death, he’s asked them to kill his other sons, fearing they’ll destroy his life’s work – what he calls the ‘Shining Truth.’

Aaron, Kevin, Damien, and Henry—who were half-siblings—found out they were related and began communicating secretly. They promised to keep their connection hidden until they could find their father.

By the end of the Netflix series Run Away, we learn how all the murders happened – except for Henry’s. However, something Dee Dee says hints that he was actually one of the first people they killed.

When discussing the fates of her half-brothers, she stated that one died in a robbery, another took his own life, and a third simply disappeared, likely having run away. As for the last one, she suggested he might be stabbed, perhaps by a troubled person experiencing homelessness and struggling with drug addiction.

She’s talking about the deaths of Damien, Kevin, and Aaron. Since the police consider the third person, Henry, to be missing, it suggests he was killed, but not shown on screen.

It’s easy to miss this detail, since she never actually mentions Henry by name, leaving many viewers confused.

Someone on Reddit recently shared their thoughts on the new mini-series Run Away, based on the Harlan Coben book. They said they enjoyed it, describing it as a classic Coben story – full of suspense, twists, and misdirection – and perfect for relaxing with on a day off.

I’m bothered by a few unresolved questions. Specifically, did someone else complete the task and offer their thoughts on it? And another person responded, pointing out, ‘What about the child she was initially trying to find?’

Another person agreed, saying, “Oh my gosh, yes. What ever happened to Henry?” Someone else added, “I also need to know what happened to Henry. I really loved that show, and that was the only thing left unresolved. I felt so bad for his dad.”

But a sharp-eyed fan noticed the hint in a comment made by Dee Dee. They pointed out that Dee Dee and Ash discuss how each of the murders needs to be unique, essentially revealing the information.

So far, the discussion has brought up a missing person, a suicide, and a burglary. It seems they believe the missing person – Henry – has already run away.

This is reinforced by the father’s observation that the story about the runaway wasn’t accurate, and that same inaccuracy later occurs with Elena.

Ingrid ending explained

Dee Dee and Ash didn’t kill Aaron; Ingrid murdered him first, trying to protect Paige. However, at the very end of the story, Simon learns a shocking truth: Ingrid was once part of the Shining Truth, and Aaron was actually her son.

Ingrid is unaware of the truth because the cult members were led to believe their children hadn’t survived childbirth. Meanwhile, Simon was trying to understand what happened, but Paige was still missing and Ingrid remained in a coma following a shooting.

After the police stopped the cult and solved the mystery, she recovered. Paige then entered rehab, and her family began to heal.

Paige and Simon find each other before Ingrid is awake. On the drive back from rehab, Simon shares his suspicion that Dee Dee and Ash weren’t responsible for Aaron’s death. Paige finally confesses that Ingrid was the one who did it, explaining she acted to shield her.

Even though Paige asked him to keep something private, he told Ingrid after she had gotten better and returned home. They discussed it and decided to be completely honest with each other moving forward.

Just when it looks like the family is starting to heal and move forward, Simon uncovers another secret. While looking at old photos of Ingrid, he learns she was actually involved with the cult, and Aaron was her son.

This clarifies Paige’s presence on the genealogy website, the reason she and Aaron chose to sleep on separate mattresses even though they seemed like a couple, and ultimately, how they initially met.

Simon shares this news with Paige, and she breaks down, confirming it’s all true. This reveals that Ingrid unknowingly killed her own son. Despite Simon and Ingrid’s agreement to be honest with each other, Paige pleads with her father to keep this a secret, fearing it would be devastating for her.

The last scene of the Netflix series depicts the family sharing a meal, but Simon appears deeply troubled. While the show only hints that he’ll hide something to protect Ingrid and Paige, the book explicitly confirms this.

Although Simon didn’t protect Ingrid when Luther shot her, he would do so now, even if it meant getting hurt himself.

Hearing his wife’s lovely laugh filled him with a fierce determination to protect it, no matter the cost. He made a firm promise to be completely honest with her—with one exception.

Many viewers are wondering why Ingrid pushed Simon to go to the location where Aaron was killed, hoping he’d discover what happened to Paige.

Someone questioned, “If Ingrid was responsible for Aaron’s death, why would she bring Simon back to the place where it happened, claiming they were searching for Paige?”

If Simon suggested it, I could understand her going along to avoid raising questions. But if I recall correctly, wasn’t it Ingrid who really wanted to go? I’m just trying to figure out why they went in the first place.

Someone else clarified, saying they thought Ingrid wanted to visit the crime scene to hide any evidence, unaware that Cornelius had already taken care of it. This was actually what initially made them suspect her.

Honestly, I saw someone suggest that it makes more sense to say they were all together looking for Paige after the fact. That way, it’s easier to explain away any fingerprints or DNA they might have left behind, you know?
