After 25 years as a professional wrestler, John Cena has retired. His last match was at Saturday Night’s Main Event XLII, and following wrestling tradition, he lost. Gunther, a wrestler from Austria, defeated Cena with a sleeper hold, ending the 24-minute match when Cena signaled he couldn’t continue.
John Cena first appeared on WWE’s SmackDown! in 2000 under the name The Prototype. He officially joined WWE in 2001 and began wrestling as himself. Early in his career, he developed a persona called the “Doctor of Thuganomics,” playing a villain who performed rap music. This popularity eventually led him to release a full hip-hop album in 2005.
John Cena is considered one of the greatest professional wrestlers ever. Earlier this year, he announced his retirement, planned for December. He’s currently doing a farewell tour, visiting arenas and fans around the globe. His path to retirement has been dramatic, including a temporary switch to the ‘villain’ role, winning the top championship at WrestleMania in April, and then passing the title on to Cody Rhodes before returning to his heroic persona.
In a surprising move, Cena signaled a possible retirement by reluctantly conceding defeat, leaving his wristbands and shoes in the ring, and offering a final salute as he exited. He can now dedicate himself to a new role: helping to build James Gunn’s DC Universe by connecting its various stories and characters.
