The Emmy Awards featured a lot of strong language this year! With the rise of streaming services, many winners – including Hannah Einbinder and John Oliver – had their acceptance speeches censored. Viewers watching from home were left wondering exactly what was being said on stage.
Even though some parts of the speeches were censored, the speakers still managed to communicate their message. What was said, despite the bleeps, is worth understanding.
Hannah Einbinder
Jean Smart’s winning speech for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for *Hacks* took a surprising turn when she cheered for her hometown team and voiced her political views. A speech timer, which also tracked potential donations lost to the Boys & Girls Club if a speech exceeded 45 seconds, was running as she spoke. Einbinder volunteered to cover any lost donations herself, then declared, “Go Birds, fuck ICE, and free Palestine.” While part of her statement was censored, the full message was still clearly heard.
John Oliver
During John Oliver’s acceptance speech for Best Scripted Variety Series, a portion was cut for U.S. viewers, but international audiences saw everything. He jokingly shouted, “Fuck you, Nate Bargatze, that is a lot of money to you!”-a reference to a donation segment earlier in the show. This came after Nate Bargatze had lightly criticized Hannah Einbinder for using profanity, and Oliver playfully retaliated, finishing with, “You can add the fucks to the swear jar!”-a line that was also censored in the U.S.
Erin Doherty
I was so thrilled to see Erin Doherty win an award for her work in *Adolescence*! Apparently, as she was leaving the stage, she couldn’t help but exclaim, “Thank you to the Academy. You’re all absolutely stunning!” It was a wonderfully cheeky and honest moment, and I loved it!
