But even the biggest hits eventually lose momentum, and reliable income streams don’t last forever. That’s why it’s smart for game companies to expand and work on multiple projects, ensuring stability if one game declines. This likely explains why PUBG Corporation, the creators of PUBG Battlegrounds, are suddenly announcing more games under the PUBG brand. But what exactly does ‘PUBG’ stand for, what does it fully represent, and who is ‘PlayerUnknown‘? Let’s take a closer look.
Brief history of PlayerUnknown and PUBG full form
About ten years ago, Fortnite exploded in popularity, becoming a cultural phenomenon. Though it’s only available through the Epic Games Store – and actually helped launch that platform – Steam offers its own similar game, PUBG: Battlegrounds. While both games aren’t as popular as they once were, they still attract hundreds of thousands of players every day. To avoid relying on just one game, the creators of PUBG decided to develop other titles. Many people unfamiliar with the gaming world might be curious about what PUBG stands for and who PlayerUnknown is.
So, PUBG actually stands for PlayerUnknown BattleGrounds! It’s kind of funny, because even though the name includes ‘PlayerUnknown,’ the original creator, Brendan Greene, doesn’t actually work with the company, PUBG Corporation, anymore. They’re still the ones making the game, though!
Brendan initially created a mod for the game DayZ (which was itself a modification of Arma 2) called DayZ Battle Royale. This caught the attention of Krafton, a South Korean game company, who then partnered with him to create his own standalone Battle Royale game, PUBG Battlegrounds, which launched in 2017. In 2019, Brendan stepped down from his position as lead designer, becoming a creative consultant, and is now working on a new project.
PUBG: Battlegrounds remains the most popular game on Steam that isn’t made by Valve. The company behind PUBG continues to expand the game’s universe with new titles. Recently, they announced PUBG: Black Budget, a military-themed extraction shooter, will soon begin closed alpha testing. They’re also developing PUBG: Blindspot, another military action game, but this one is a 5v5 team-based shooter with a top-down viewpoint.
So, PUBG is still growing, and honestly, I’m expecting big things from it in the future. But here’s the thing – the company that owns PUBG, Krafton, is really pushing AI, and some of their choices seem kinda questionable. That might be a dealbreaker for some players, I get it. But no matter how you feel about that, if you’re a fan of the PUBG world, there’s definitely a lot to look forward to!
