Remember Hytale? It started as a popular Minecraft server called Hypixel, which then grew into Hypixel Studios. They were developing Hytale, a game inspired by Minecraft, with plans for Riot Games (the creators of League of Legends) to publish it. Sadly, after about 10 years of work, the project was canceled just recently. However, there’s still a glimmer of hope for the future.
Hytale creator still wants to complete the project, and has offered to buy it from Riot
It’s common for video games to get canceled, especially large projects from major companies. Often, these cancellations are never publicly announced, and the games are never released. We saw this earlier this year with Xbox and Microsoft canceling both the Perfect Dark remake and the survival game Everwild. However, even smaller independent studios face this issue – one of my most-awaited indie titles, Earthblade from the Celeste developers, was recently canceled. While it’s disappointing when this happens, there’s always a chance the team might revisit the idea or create something new in the future.
The cancellation of the game Hytale wasn’t a sudden choice. It was a decision made jointly by Hypixel and Riot Games after several years of work on the project. However, according to Hypixel’s founder, Riot Games might still return ownership of the game to its original creator. A few months ago, Hypixel’s founder, Simon, shared on social media that they were in talks with Riot Games about a potential purchase of Hytale. Unfortunately, those posts were shared in August, and Simon hasn’t provided any further updates since then. Thanks to GamePro for recently bringing these posts to light.

The offer seems very generous, with Simon saying it’s ten times the actual worth of the project. He also mentions re-hiring some people from the Hypixel team, suggesting he’s optimistic about it. But without more information, it’s hard to say anything beyond that for sure.
It’s normal that we haven’t heard any updates on these discussions, as these things often take a while to conclude – and there’s no guarantee an agreement will even be reached. It’s difficult to see what Riot Games would do with Hytale if they acquired it, as the game heavily relies on the expertise of Hypixel Studios. Even if Riot tried to continue development themselves, they would likely face strong criticism from fans.
There’s still a chance that Hytale might eventually be released. If Simon can regain control of the game from Riot Games, it could happen. Until then, we’ll need to be patient and keep an eye out for any news.
