Let’s be honest, ranking video game movies is tough because, historically, they haven’t been very good. We’ve seen a lot of misses – I’m thinking of films like Super Mario Bros. and Doom that just didn’t quite land. Even the ones people enjoy, like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter, are usually more fun for their over-the-top silliness than for being genuinely good movies.
Things have shifted recently, as The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a huge success, and films like Sonic the Hedgehog, Detective Pikachu, and Gran Turismo were generally well-received. Interestingly, the video game movie with the best score on Rotten Tomatoes isn’t based on a game most people would recognize.
Werewolves Within Is RT’s Highest-Rated Video Game Movie
According to Rotten Tomatoes, the highest-rated movie based on a video game is 2021’s Werewolves Within. Critics gave it an 86% rating, and audiences scored it at 80%. It’s a bit of a surprise pick, as it wasn’t a huge blockbuster.
The movie Werewolves Within features a talented cast including Sam Richardson, Milana Vayntrub, and Harvey Guillén. The film follows a group of people stranded in a snowy Vermont town who begin to suspect a werewolf is hiding among them.
I absolutely loved this indie film! Everyone’s been talking about how good the script is, and I totally agree. It’s really funny, but it’s also a clever mystery that kept me guessing. Honestly, if you’re expecting a scary horror movie, you might be surprised – it leans much more into the comedy and mystery side of things. But trust me, it’s a fantastic watch, and the actors are all incredibly talented. I had a great time!
Werewolves Within Is A Little-Known Game
When the movie Werewolves Within was released in 2021, many viewers didn’t realize it was based on a video game. The game, released in 2016, wasn’t very well known, despite being published by the large video game company, Ubisoft. It simply didn’t get much attention at the time.
The game centers around the same idea as the original: a town is terrorized by a werewolf, and players must uncover the hidden identity of the werewolf among them. While it shares this core concept with the movie, the game is set in a medieval fantasy world. Just like the film, the game proved to be popular with players.
Werewolves Within was well-received by critics. It earned a score of 76 on Metacritic and a 7/10 from GameSpot, and was also named one of the top 10 VR games for PlayStation by Official UK PlayStation Magazine.
Adapting a niche game like this into a movie was a gamble, but the warm response to Werewolves Within suggests it paid off, even if it wasn’t a huge box office success. It remains to be seen if any future video game movie can match its positive score on Rotten Tomatoes.
