There’s been a lot of news about upcoming Star Wars films recently, but a particularly interesting update hasn’t gotten much attention. One of the most awaited movies just received significant news, and it deserves to be discussed more widely.
There’s been uncertainty about the future of Lucasfilm’s Lando series, but recent news confirms it’s still in development. This could also signal a fresh direction for how Star Wars stories are told in upcoming projects.
6 After It Was First Announced, We Just Got Our Biggest Lando Update Yet
It’s been six years since Donald Glover first mentioned his Lando project, and now we have the biggest news yet. Originally planned as a series for Disney+, the project has been reworked into a feature film. Donald Glover and his brother, Stephen, are writing the screenplay.
Kathleen Kennedy, the former president of Lucasfilm, recently told Deadline that Donald Glover has finally submitted a script for the Lando Calrissian movie. This is the most significant news in years, suggesting the project is moving forward after a long period of doubt.
Donald Glover’s Lando Proves Star Wars Recasts Can Be Done Well
While Alden Ehrenreich did a good job as young Han Solo, Donald Glover’s portrayal of a younger Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story was a standout performance that everyone loved. Glover effortlessly captured the same charisma as Billy Dee Williams, demonstrating that bringing back iconic characters with new actors can be successful when the casting is right.
The continued focus on Lando Calrissian by Lucasfilm hints that the studio might be open to bringing back other characters from the original Star Wars trilogy in future projects, potentially with new actors.
As a fan, I really think the New Republic stories could be amazing, but I’m starting to believe it might be better to recast some of our original trilogy heroes instead of relying so much on expensive and often awkward CGI to make them appear younger. The more we see those characters, the harder it is to make that CGI look truly convincing, so bringing in new actors who look like them could be a much stronger path forward.
Even though the CGI version of Luke Skywalker in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett looks good, I much prefer the idea of bringing in a new actor – like Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian. Still, I’m really looking forward to seeing the Lando series when it’s released.
