Wendy Williams Speaks Out Against Guardianship: ‘I Am Not Cognitively Impaired’ and ‘I Feel Like I’m in Prison’

On “The Breakfast Club” this Thursday, Wendy Williams expressed her feelings about her current guardianship, stating, “I feel as if I’m serving a sentence.” Since 2022, she has been under the care of guardians due to health issues, specifically being diagnosed with dementia and aphasia, conditions that affect memory and communication skills.

In response to being on “The Breakfast Club,” Williams asserted that the statement in question was false. She posed a question to the hosts, DJ Envy, Charlamagne Tha God, and Jess Hilarious, asking if she appeared that way, expressing her frustration with the assumption.

She expressed that, though she’s not intellectually disabled, it feels to her like a prison, the care center where she resides. ‘I’m in an environment filled with individuals in their 90s, 80s, and 70s… There seems to be something amiss among the residents on this floor,’ she commented.

I myself, a devoted fan, called into the show to stand by my beloved aunt, Williams. I shared with everyone that her apartment in the care facility consists of essentials such as a bed, chair, television, and a bathroom, with her gazing out one window at buildings opposite the street. Later on, I mentioned that she can make calls to her dear ones but unfortunately, they are unable to reach her and there’s no internet access for her through a laptop or iPad. She shared her heartache about having spent her last three birthdays isolated due to the facility’s stringent security measures. Using her own words, she called this situation “emotional abuse.

Williams was inquired about the two-part Lifetime documentary titled “Where Is Wendy Williams?”, which aired not long after her diagnosis announcement. Initially, her legal representative, Sabrina E. Morrissey, attempted to halt its broadcast, alleging exploitation. However, A&E and Lifetime responded by filing a lawsuit against Morrissey, claiming that she realized the documentary would contain criticism of her role as guardian.

Williams stated about the documentary, ‘She was the one who wanted to take action, if I’m making myself clear?’ She went on to express her feelings about being mistreated, saying, ‘Let me be clear, the system I’m part of is flawed, a system that has unfortunately distorted truths.’

Morrissey did not immediately respond to EbMaster‘s request for comment.

Alex, Williams’ niece, mentioned that those who wish to back Williams can do so by using the hashtag “#FreeWendy” and signing the petition available on Change.org.

Alex remarked, “My aunt appears to be in good health. I’ve only interacted with her briefly, but our conversation suggests she’s not incapacitated. That’s why we refer to her situation as a ‘luxury prison.’ She’s confined and restricted, regardless of the reasons people have concocted for her continued detention.

From 2008 to 2021, Williams served as the host of “The Wendy Williams Show.” However, health concerns led to her stepping down from hosting duties. The series concluded its run in June 2022 following a number of guest hosts taking over during Williams’ absence.

As a movie reviewer reflecting on the character of Wendy in recent films, I’ve noticed that concerns about her cognitive abilities have been brought up from time to time. Some viewers have even suggested that there might be underlying conditions affecting Wendy, especially when her speech became unclear, her behavior grew inconsistent, and she seemed perplexed during financial transactions. Last year, the news of her official diagnosis finally shed light on these mysteries.

Making this announcement was challenging, requiring thoughtful deliberation, not just to foster empathy and compassion for Wendy, but also to increase knowledge about aphasia and frontotemporal dementia. This step is intended to help the multitude of individuals dealing with similar situations. Regrettably, those diagnosed with aphasia and frontotemporal dementia often encounter prejudice and confusion, especially when they start showing behavior changes before receiving a proper diagnosis.
