As a huge fan of IT: Welcome to Derry, I was so excited to hear Aryan S. Cartaya reveal how a key character got their name! Apparently, there’s a connection to Marge Truman, which is a really cool detail. The season finale of the HBO Max series was incredible, finally giving us some backstory on Pennywise and the Losers’ Club, and that last-minute twist with Beverly Marsh totally blew my mind!
Since the show takes place in 1962—27 years before the first movie—it was inevitable that Welcome to Derry would start revealing connections to the original Losers’ Club. We’ve already learned that Will Hanlon is Mike Hanlon’s father. Fans also began to speculate about a link between Marge and Richie Tozier, noticing similarities in their personalities and a past event where Richie saved Marge’s friend during a dangerous fire. The show’s finale has now confirmed what many viewers suspected about Marge Truman.
Is Marge from ‘Welcome to Derry’ Richie’s Mom?

The ending of IT: Welcome to Derry showed that Pennywise doesn’t experience time like humans do. He demonstrated this by calling Richie Tozier’s mother, Margaret, during their fight and then showing a ‘missing’ poster of Richie from the future. This confirmed that Margaret Tozier is indeed Richie’s mother in both IT: Chapter One and IT: Chapter Two.
Pennywise: “Margaret Tozier!”
Marge Truman: “Tozier?”
Not quite yet, you’re not Richie Tozier yet. First comes love, then marriage, then Richie in a baby carriage! But… unless you both die together!
In a recent TopMob interview, actor Arian S. Cartaya, who starred in IT: Welcome to Derry, revealed that his character, Richie, was the inspiration for the name of Richie Tozier in the IT movies. Cartaya explained that the character Marge developed a high school crush on his character, Rich, and decided to name her son after him. He said he was very surprised and pleased by this connection.
TopMob asked if the person was aware from the beginning that they were named after the original character, Richie, and if anyone had told them.
Arian S. Cartaya shared that the connection between Richie and his parents, Rich and Marge, was initially kept somewhat hidden. A few weeks before filming a key scene in the Black Spot, the cast learned that Marge is Richie’s mother and that she and Rich had a high school romance. She named her son after him, which Cartaya found incredibly moving and exciting to witness unfold.
Cartaya’s statement largely validated fan theories about where the name ‘Richie’ actually came from, and it adds a new layer of understanding when watching important moments in the IT films.
Throughout the finale, there were hints that Marge was Richie’s mother, even before the major reveal about Pennywise. For example, Marge frequently swore and repeated the exact same line Richie said in Chapter One: “I want to kill that fing clown.”
In IT: Welcome to Derry, Rich bravely sacrificed himself during the chaotic burning of the Black Spot while trying to save Marge. This moment was especially poignant because he and Marge had just shared a loving confession, making his sacrifice all the more heartbreaking.

Looking back at the ending, Pennywise’s attempt to kill Marge showed he’s far from helpless. He was trying to avoid the dark future shown in the IT movies by stopping Richie Tozier from ever being born.

Since Pennywise failed to kill Marge, the clown’s plan for future seasons might involve targeting people connected to the Losers’ Club. He could travel back in time to prevent their ancestors from ever being born, effectively erasing the Losers from existence.
Don’t you see your son? That little boy, and his friends, are the ones who will destroy me – or maybe create me? It’s hard to keep track of time when you’re me. Tomorrow and yesterday feel the same. But being stuck here, in this one place, is difficult. They can’t hold me! Not them, and certainly not you. Beep beep, Margie.
Why Richie Tozier Is Important in The Fight Against Pennywise

Richie Tozier was the brave and outspoken heart of the Losers’ Club in the IT films. His sarcastic humor and loud personality provided much-needed relief during their frightening experiences with Pennywise, helping his friends stay strong and overcome their fear. In fact, Richie landed the first hit on Pennywise during the big fight in IT: Chapter One, which gave the others the courage to fight back instead of running away.
Pennywise targeted Marge in 1962 because he understood Richie’s importance in ultimately defeating him. By silencing Richie’s humor, Pennywise aimed to weaken the Losers’ Club, removing the source of joy and resilience that helped them cope with the terrifying events.

Although Pennywise didn’t kill Marge previously, the creature understood how to exploit Richie’s hidden fears. The films reveal Richie was secretly gay and in love with Eddie, but he never got to express those feelings. Pennywise tragically killed Richie during the final fight in IT: Chapter Two before he could.
Even though Eddie’s death was tragic, it ultimately helped Richie accept who he really was in the ending of IT: Chapter Two. This shows that Pennywise’s attempt to destroy Richie actually failed.
