So, I was reading an interview with Zach Cregger, the director behind the upcoming Resident Evil movie, and it got me thinking about his future. He’s been talking about whether he’s going to step away from horror after this one. It seems like the question came up because he’s now attached to direct a sci-fi film called Flood, and people are wondering if that signals a shift in his career focus. He shared some really personal thoughts on why horror resonates with him, and it was fascinating to hear how much of himself he puts into these projects.
Zach Cregger doesn’t have ‘any plans to’ shift from making horror movies
Zach Cregger recently discussed his interest in continuing to direct horror films in an interview with Collider. He was asked if he was concerned about becoming known primarily for horror, similar to how Ari Aster is often categorized.
Cregger pointed out that he and Ari have different perspectives on horror. He clarified that Ari doesn’t see any negative perception associated with the genre. Cregger himself doesn’t view horror as a stepping stone to other types of films, and he’s open to making a non-horror movie in the future.
He plans to keep incorporating scary and unsettling elements into his films, even when they aren’t strictly horror movies. The director of Barbarian explained that his upcoming sci-fi film, ‘Flood,’ will still feature strong horror themes because he personally enjoys dark and frightening content. He simply said, ‘That’s my favorite thing.’
Cregger explained that making horror movies just feels natural to him. He also noted that horror is popular right now, which has been great for his career. Because he enjoys making them and they’re doing well, he plans to continue directing horror films.
Cregger explained that even though he’s usually a cheerful person, he’s drawn to scary things. He shared that he listens to genuinely frightening content to help him sleep, and surprisingly, it makes him happy. He clarified that he doesn’t have any bad intentions, but these dark themes are simply comforting to him.
